The aim of this article is to identify which institutional factors influence development processes and to present the application of institutional economics in the study of territorial development determinants. To this end, a content analysis of previous publications in this field was carried out. The article discusses the theoretical foundations regarding institutional economics, its assumptions and its evolution up to the emergence of the new institutional economics (NIE). The authors then present various aspects of institutional economics that can be applied to regional development theory. The paper shows what kind of research is useful when analysing the impact of institutional factors on the territorial development. The final part of the article provides general conclusions on the described issues and recommends possible further directions and ways to develop research in this field, while including considerations from the sphere of current economic trends and issues of territorial development.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie czynników instytucjonalnych mających wpływ na procesy rozwojowe, a także przedstawienie zastosowań ekonomii instytucjonalnej w badaniach nad terytorialnymi uwarunkowaniami rozwoju. W tym celu przeprowadzono analizę treści dotychczasowych publikacji i teorii z tego obszaru nauki. W artykule omówiono podstawy teoretyczne dotyczące ekonomii instytucjonalnej, jej założeń oraz ewolucji aż do powstania nowej ekonomii instytucjonalnej (NEI). Następnie autorzy przedstawili różne nurty ekonomii instytucjonalnej, które mogą znaleźć zastosowanie na gruncie teorii rozwoju regionalnego. Praca ukazuje, jakiego rodzaju badania są przydatne w przypadku analizy wpływu czynników instytucjonalnych na rozwój terytorialny. W końcowej części opracowania zawarto ogólne wnioski z zakresu opisywanej problematyki, a także zarekomendowano możliwe dalsze kierunki i sposoby rozwoju badań w tym obszarze, osadzając rozważania w sferze nurtów myśli ekonomicznej i zagadnień rozwoju terytorialnego.
