Praca ta ma na celu przybliżyć historię badań i leczenia otyłości. Ten problem zdrowotny zajmuje istotne miejsce w historii medycyny już od czasów Hipokratesa. Mimo ogromnego postępu medycyny, zasadnicze leczenie otyłości do dziś opiera się na diecie i aktywności fizycznej. Niestety te proste zasady, w zderzeniu z zasadniczymi zmianami stylu życia, jakie zaszły w populacji ludzkiej w XX wieku, zdają się być coraz mniej przestrzegane. Efektem tego jest obserwowana współcześnie epidemia otyłości, w walce z którą zdajemy się wciąż przegrywać.

The aim of the study was a presentation of history of research studies and treatment of obesity. This health problem take an important place in history of medicine since the times of Hippocrates. Despite great progress of medicine, the basic rules of obesity treatment rest on the diet and physical activity. Unfortunately these two simple rules, in collision with fundamental changes in lifestyle, which took place in human population in XX century, seem to be less complied with overtime. The effect of it seems to be the recently observed epidemic of obesity. The fight with this epidemic we are still loosing.
