First direct contacts between SPD activists and Polish bishops were initiated during the visit of chancellor Helmut Schmidt in Poland in 1977. A turning point in mutual relations came, however, only after the events of summer 1980, when the Church played an important consolidating and stabilizing role for internal affairs in Poland. A meaning of the Church in those days was always underlined by the German social democratic politicians. The current situation was a topic of lots of conversations between them and different partners from West and East. Within many ‘summit meetings’ they met Primate Józef Glemp and bishop Bronisław Dąbrowski. These good relations did not mean that all social democrats understood and supported activity of the Church as a political factor. Many members of SPD presented critical attitude to this question. It is a matter of fact that the Catholics were a minority among both a social democratic members of Bundestag and voters. In spite of the criticism, the role of the Church in Poland was realized and appreciated as an institution acting against political and economic destabilization.

The situation in Poland at the end of 1988 as well as the dynamic changes in the first half of 1989 were a subject of many analyses in West Germany conducted by politicians and trade unionists. First of all, they were interested in the development of opposition’s power and also the condition of internal reforms. On this base they tried to predict directions of the future of Polish development. In West Germany the following questions were raised: What will the Polish political scene look like? What will democracy and Solidarity be in Poland? Furthermore, West German observers were tracking political “trends” of newly created political and social organizations. From the analysis emerges not only a picture of the country’s internal division and complicated domes­tic relations, but also a lack of a positive programme, internal tensions and contradictory interests. In that crucial time, public consciousness of the importance of changes had accompanied to passivity great part of society. Foreign observers more than once expressed anxiety that Poland could miss the opportunity which arose from the citizens’ mobilizations and the Solidarity movement from the beginning of the 1980s.

In the 1980s, the peace movement, which was mobilizing hundreds of thousands of people in protests against the double act passed by NATO in December 1979, was an integral element of the West-German political stage. It influenced the system of power and internal conflicts within the German Social Democracy (SPD), being the strongest opponent of the policy run by the government of Chancellor Schmidt. It also contributed to the formation of the Green Party and was the object of polemics within trade unions. Apart from that it provided a stimulus for debates of the ethical and religious character within the Catholic and Protestant Churches in the FRG. W latach 80. XX wieku ruch pokojowy mobilizujący setki tysięcy osób w protestach przeciwko podwójnej uchwale NATO z grudnia 1979 r. był istotnym elementem zachodnioniemieckiej sceny politycznej. Wpływał na układ sił i konflikty wewnętrzne w socjaldemokracji niemieckiej (SPD); będąc największym oponentem polityki prowadzonej przez rząd kanclerza Helmuta Schmidta, przyczynił się do powstania Partii Zielonych, a jego działania doprowadziły do zaistnienia polemiki w związkach zawodowych i były bodźcem do dyskusji etycznych i religijnych w Kościele katolickim i protestanckim w RFN. Stał się również przedmiotem wielu kontrowersji oraz symbolem aktywności i siły społecznej.
