Older adults have a long-time perspective when it comes to the perception of changes in local climate and are uniquely vulnerable to these developments in terms of health. The discussed in-depth, qualitative study is based on interviews with people from the age group over 65 years (N = 10; five females), who live in different regions of Poland, concerning their views on climate change and its mitigation. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to create a map of their observations and attitudes. Results indicate the importance of perceiving climate change in specific and local categories as well as show frequent identification of this issue with traditional environmentalism focussed on pollution and littering. This foregrounds difficulties in understanding invisible greenhouse gases and how they work. In terms of mitigation, the study has revealed little faith in climate action undertaken by fellow citizens and the government, as well as a sense of limited agency, which is also disproportionally projected onto children and young adults. However, through everyday observations, older adults appear to be profoundly aware of how climate change impacts the environment. Contrary to stereotypes, they also declare high emotional engagement in this issue. Consequently, despite being overlooked with respect to this subject, older adults can play an important role in promoting climate awareness and climate-friendly policies.
The mode of stories told by adolescents about their parents and its relationshipThe study examines the link between the sense of adulthood and characteristics and structure of young people narratives about their parents. Examined were the written stories from 16–19 years old about their parents. The questionnaire authored by Wanda Zagórska – “Yours Life Situation rate” was used as measure of the sense of adulthood. This toll provides the measure of psychical maturity and can be understood as self rated sense of adulthood. The content analysis as well as structural analysis reveled in this age group significant predominance of commentary and argument focused text forms. The most characteristic arguments concern closeness and contact with parents. More rare narrative forms had different character and were related to higher sense of adulthood of their authors. The implications of such results, especially of narrative understanding of experience are being discussed.
This article discusses the applicability of semantic field analysis to the study of development and change in important interpersonal relations on the example of parent-child relationships. The narrative material was compiled from responses of 348 teenagers and young adults aged 13-30 years. Participants wrote about their parents (“Tell me about your parents”). On the basis of the context, semantic fields were generated for the high-incidence phrase “to love one’s parents”, which is the primary model of conceptualizing the parent-child relationship in our culture. The results demonstrate the material complexity of the „love for parents” semantic field in the study group, and reveal the associative network of other semantic relations involving this concept. They also confirm the hypotheses on subtle developmental changes in the understanding of “love for parents” between early adolescence and adulthood. The study presents the application of methods based on linguistic analysis of language to the analysis of developmental changes in important personal relationships.
