W funkcjonowanie organizacji i sektorów jest w sposób trwały wpisana zmiana. Można przyjąć, że w przypadku sektora fonograficznego czynnikiem, który w ostatnich dekadach w szczególny sposób zmienił jego funkcjonowanie, była technologia. Skutkowała ona nie tylko malejącym poziomem przychodów ze sprzedaży, ale też zmianą układu sił w sektorze, podzielonym tradycyjnie na kilku dużych graczy oraz wiele niezależnych przedsiębiorstw. Celem opracowania jest przedstawienie procesu internacjonalizacji dwóch przedsiębiorstw, po jednym z każdej z tych dwóch grup oraz ukazanie kierunków zmian umiędzynarodowienia, dostrzegalnych w tym sektorze, a wyrażonych w pozycji konkurencyjnej produktu, którą jest miejsce na liście sprzedaży.

Change is a factor which describes functioning of organizations and whole sectors in a permanent way. It can be assumed that what has changed, the enviroment of the recording industry in a significant way was the continuity of technological changes. These changes resulted not only in decreased revenues of the industry, but altered the balance of forces within it as well. Traditionally, the industry has been divided into two groups: relatively small group of majors – multinational companies, and numerous indies – independent labels. The first aim of the article is to present the phases of becoming an international in case of two firms representing both groups: PolyGram and Nuclear Blast. The second aim is to answer the question whether small independent labels are able to compete successfully on the market dominated by techologically advanced majors, and the proposed measure of the competitive position is the chart performance.
