The love and affection of Saint Constantine-Cyril, also called the Philosopher, for truth and wisdom was manifested in several disputes whereby he brilliantly argued in favour of his opinion. The author of the study was inspired by this feature of his character. Based on his argumentation, he proposes to specify the use of the term ‘unbeliever’ or ‘believer’ according to the latest results of experimental sciences, philosophy and theology, which have not yet proved that only ‘believers’ believe in God, while ‘unbelievers’ would not be believers in the matter, in chance or in anything other than the first principle, but would be ‘aware’, ‘knowing’, who experimentally proved where the universe comes from and who controls it. A statement of this type is already found in the Catholic funeral ceremony. The author’s efforts may contribute to the clarification of expression in philosophy, religious studies, theology, exact sciences, to more precise formulas in the Slovak language, as well as to mutual dialogue and understanding of members of antagonistic worldviews. It is also a contribution to the development of the Cyril-Methodian philosophical heritage which the Slovak Republic Constitution refers to in the preamble.

The “Suggestions for Refining Theological Terminology in Slovak. Part V.” project deals with the incorrect wording of the term ‘spouses’ in relation to the ministers and recipients of the sacrament of Matrimony. Several magisterial, liturgical and theological works contain expressions such as “the spouses receive the sacrament of Matrimony”. The author of the study argues that the ministers and recipients of the sacrament of Matrimony should be called “the engaged couple”. They should be referred to as ‘spouses’ only after the matrimonial consent, as indicated in some works.

Constantine (Cyril) and Methodius translated the Bible and liturgical books into Old Slavonic. Thus began the long process of refining theological terminology. According to Bishop Jozef Zlatňanský, Slovak legal and theological terminology is only gradually being formed and will need to be further refined. He himself contributed to its refinement in the Slovak translation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This ever-present challenge is followed by suggestions in this study to refine terminology in those areas of theology in which the pioneering work of the brothers from Thessaloniki was done: in biblical and liturgical theology. The authors present alternatives to the hitherto used terms order, divine nature, love of God [the Father], Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and aliturgical day. The authors also add an incentive for the competent authorities to express which of the terms ‘staroslovienčina’ or ‘staroslovenčina’ (Old Slavonic) is correct or to at least slightly shift the discussion to solve this dilemma.

The aim of the current study is to present, interpret and apply the results of quantitative research focused on the perception and reception of the prominent representative of the secret Church, bishop, witness and thinker Ján Chryzostom Korec (1924 – 2015) among the communities of foreign Slovaks. Considering the fact that in 1990-2005 Korec was the diocesan bishop of Nitra, i.e. in the place to which history ascribes the designation “Methodius’ Seat”, and at the same time taking into account the fact that all his pastoral efforts have a distinct Cyrillo-Methodian character, the results of the research on the knowledge and reception of his person can be considered relevant also for the field of research on the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition. In the first part, the study focuses on the personality of Bishop Ján Chryzostom Korec as “Methodius’ successor”. At the same time, on the basis of an analysis of his extensive literary output, we prove the thesis that the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition forms the main axis of Korec’s mission as both pastor and thinker. The second part presents the results of the quantitative survey (630 respondents: 59.5% women (N = 375) and 40.5% men (N = 255) conducted from November 2023 to January 2024. The study concludes with a summary of the research applied to practice, offering four concrete suggestions within the context of the Slovak Cardinal and his Cyrillo-Methodian legacy to make the Slovak Cardinal better known to contemporary Slovaks abroad and at home.
