The proclamation of pessimistic visions of the future of western civilization was a characteristic feature of the Polish social thought in the first half of the 20th century. However, there are also concepts in which the future of humanity was presented optimistically. They include the philosophy of history by Feliks Młynarski. In the opinion of the philosopher, the history of humanity is arranged according to the opposition of individualism and universalism. The western civilization stands at the threshold of advantageous changes that lead towards the rule of individualism. In the future, the creative initiative of a human unit will be appreciated, it will be the time of social justice and human freedom.

Charakterystycznym rysem polskiej myśli społecznej pierwszej połowy XX wieku było głoszenie pesymistycznych wizji  przyszłości cywilizacji zachodniej. Jednakże można też pokazać takie koncepcje, w których optymistycznie ujmowano przyszłość ludzkości. Do takich można zaliczyć filozofię dziejów Feliksa Młynarskiego. Zdaniem myśliciela dzieje ludzkości układają się według opozycji indywidualizm – uniwersalizm. Cywilizacja zachodnia stoi u progu korzystnych zmian, które prowadzą ją w stronę panowania indywidualizmu. W przyszłości będzie doceniana inicjatywa twórcza jednostki ludzkiej, zapanuje sprawiedliwość społeczna i wolność człowieka.

This article shows the leading role of the elite in creating cultural heritage. Since the subject of reflection has been the society, carried out on the search for distinctive features of outstanding individuals. Many thinkers emphasized the culture-forming, nation-forming and political importance of the elites. Most often in the concepts of the elitist his influence on the direction of social development. The elitist tendencies culminated in the early twentieth century. Also in the works of Polish thinkers can be found threads of elitism.

W artykule ukazuję wiodącą rolę elit w tworzeniu dorobku kulturowego. Odkąd obiektem refleksji stało się społeczeństwo, prowadzono rozważania nad poszukiwaniem cech charakterystycznych jednostek wybitnych. Wielu myślicieli podkreślało znaczenie kulturotwórcze, narodotwórcze i polityczne elit. Najczęściej w koncepcjach elitarystycznych ukazywano wpływ elit na kierunek rozwoju społecznego. Tendencje elitarystyczne swą kulminacje osiągnęły na początku XX wieku. Również w twórczości polskich myślicieli można odnaleźć wątki elitaryzmu.

In the broad spectrum of Bertrand Russell’s interests the socio‑political issues had a special role. The possibility of peaceful global co‑existence was most important to him. Occasionally he took part in the disputes between West and East accepting the role of a mediator. He saw a chance for peace in the creation of a world government. Kant had proposed a similar project of a supranational community and hoped it could result in the emergence of a global society, embracing all nations. With this achievement in place, the project of ‘eternal peace’ could be completed, he hoped. In this way, relying on ethical and legal principles, Kant designed a permanent international peace alliance.
