The issue of desecrating special places of worship, such as cemeteries, is always controversial because they should be inviolable. Such behavior, however, deserves particular condemnation when it attacks national, ethnic and religious minorities, as it violates their sense of security and guarantees of tolerance, and destroys their cultural heritage. An example of such a minority are Old Believers living in the Suwałki Region. In 2020, the public was shocked by the information about the desecration of the Old Believer cemetery in the Giby commune. This text is an attempt to present the position of the members of the community based on their cultural heritage and religious traditions, as well as the interpretation of regulations relating to the issue of freedom of religion, including places of worship, the dignity of the deceased, the right to burial and the care of memorial sites in accordance with the religion.
