Expressiveness of the language is one of the most characteristic features of Polish everyday language. It is often uses to express inner states of the message sender. It also names mental activities as well as external features of man, such as age or sex. Sobriquets and epithets are closely linked to the transfer of emotions of the speaker directed to the addressee of those expression. They can ridicule or belittle the advantages of a person or even laugh at it. Chmielewska uses both of them. Their overarching role is to show emotional attitude of the main characters of the novel in relation to the form of episodic characters, who are regarded to be less nice.

Ekspresywność języka jest jedną z najbardziej charakterystycznych cech codziennego języka polskiego. Często jest używana do wyrażania wewnętrznych stanów nadawcy wiadomości. Nazwa także czynności umysłowe oraz zewnętrzne cechy człowieka, takie jak wiek czy płeć. Przezwiska i epitety są ściśle związane z przekazywaniem emocji mówcy skierowanych do adresata tych wyrażeń. Mogą one ośmieszać lub umniejszać zalety osoby, a nawet z niej drwić. Chmielewska używa obu tych form. Ich nadrzędną rolą jest ukazanie emocjonalnego nastawienia głównych bohaterów powieści w stosunku do postaci epizodycznych, które są uważane za mniej miłe.

This work shows the processes of creation of city names. The process of shaping urban names has been changing over the years. It was a prolonged process depending on inhabitants. Citizens shaped their own names in their daily lives. The names usually informed about original landscape or employment of people. They reported economic and industrial progress or turbulent history of the city. Nowadays we can observe the paradigm of shift in naming function caused by officials. It is the effect of our life in a hurry.

W pracy przedstawiono procesy powstawania nazw miejskich. Proces kształtowania nazw w miastach zmienia się na przestrzeni lat. Był to proces długotrwały, zależny od mieszkańców. Obywatele kształtowali swoje nazwy w codziennym życiu. Nazwy najczęściej informowały o pierwotnym krajobrazie lub zatrudnieniu ludzi. Informowały także o postępie gospodarczym i przemysłowym czy burzliwej historii miasta. Współcześnie możemy zaobserwować zmianę paradygmatu funkcji nazewnictwa spowodowaną przez urzędników. To efekt naszego pędu życia.
