The text deals with the translatological problem which treats translation as one of the main testimonies of the reception of literary texts in a foreign culture. The author is interested in: reconstruction of a specific model of reading Polish literary works by the selected Czech translator, finding the reasons why this specific model is applied as well as reconstruction of the results of all such efforts. The subject of the analysis is the translational work of the Czech poet and eminent translator – Vladimír Holan.

The article presents a brief survey of the history of the Polish literary studies in the Czech Republic and the subsequent paradigms of the scholarly research which this branch of knowledge adopted. The author also ponders over the way of arranging and presenting the literary material on lectures and Polish language seminars as well as over the ways of educating Polish philologists outside Poland, in the time of ever firmer cross-cultural relationships, involvement in relations, the dialogue of cultures.

The work Identity in Czech literary genres: national, territorial, cultural or historical? is an attempt at providing an answer to the title question by describing the conditions in which the characteristic features of Czech literary genres emerged and were amplified during the Czech national revival in the first half of the 19th century.
