Marital satisfaction of parents of a child with intellectual disabilityThe paper presents the research aimed at determining the factors affecting the sense of marital satisfaction of parents of a child with intellectual disability. Special attention has been paid to the way in which the parental role is understood as well as to the parents’ description of their child. The research has involved 165 mothers and fathers of children with intellectual disability, aged 23–76. The following methods have been used: the Questionnaire of a Well-matched Couple (KDM-2), the Questionnaire My Child (KMD) and the Questionnaire of Fulfilling the Parental Role towards a Child with Intellectual Disability (KRRR). The results show that approval of the parental role and a positive way in which the parents describe their child belong to the factors supporting the parents’ marital satisfaction.

The parenthood occupies a special place among family roles. The role of a mother or a father opens new perspectives and contributes certain values and experiences to the life of the individual. It can be assumed that the successful development of an offspring is one of the most important criteria of the successful parenthood. The mental handicap of a child is a factor determining the implementation of parental roles, and thus an individual development of mother or father. The results of study of parents with mentally handicapped child are presented in the paper.

The birth of a disabled child is an event, which has an influence on the quality of family life. In the article the author presents how the child’s disability determines life situation of other family members. The paper described the specificity of parental roles in the family with a disabled child and the analyzed psychosocial situation of the healthy siblings.
