Russia tries to convince us all, that its bloody war in Chechnya is in fact “the antiterrorist operation”, and that Chechens fight not for the independence and freedom but that they are only the next fanatics like Osama bin Laden and mullah Omar. Is in fact Chechnyan war for independence finished, and the religious war started? Or maybe it has even never been the war for independence? In this paper we analyze the Chechens’ attitude to Islam, its traditions and rules. We analyze the reasons for growing Islam’s popularity in Caucasus (also in case of wahhabism) and its impact on the character of war. We show the mechanism of “self-fulfilling prophecy”, which says about the danger of religious war explosion on Caucasus. Discussing with official Russian policy, we distinguish the reasons and consequences of changing political situation.
