There are 460 social archives in Poland. The KARTA centre records these entities and supports their activities. The article summarises the discussions about defining a social archive, describes the organisations that maintain such archives, and their collections. Social archives are distinguished by their activities, which are addressed to the local community - and the article describes the scope of these activities. The article concludes with reflections on the perspectives of social archives.
