Economic Structure of Slovak Regions as a Significant Tool of Their Potential Development

In order to achieve smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, the European Union has set a spectrum of targets via the growth strategy titled ‘Europe 2020’. These targets are elaborated in detail and coordinated in specific national programs and national policies of European Union member states. A detailed analysis of economic structure that influences the situation in a particular region in an outstanding way can be considered a significant activity for the purpose of examination of the current situation and potential development of particular European regions. Research on stronger and weaker economic areas provides the state with important information for decisions on further strategic development of a particular region. The main aim of this paper is to analyse the economic structure of the Slovak Republic and its regions with the help of secondary data. On the basis of this analysis we will determine the possible areas of potential development for specific economic areas in Slovak regions.

Do osiągnięcia zrównoważonego rozwoju Unia Europejska przyjęła szereg celów szczegółowych, które zostały zapisane w strategii „Europa 2020”. Cele zostały szczegółowo zapisane w narodowych programach poszczególnych państw członkowskich. Szczegółowa analiza struktur ekonomicznych, może przyczynić się do oceny bieżącej sytuacji potencjału rozwojowego określonego regionu. Badania mocnych i słabych stron rozwoju ekonomicznego umożliwiają samorządowym regionom podejmowanie strategicznych decyzji rozwojowych. Głównym celem artykułu jest analiza struktur ekonomicznych słowackich regionów. Na podstawie tej analizy autorzy określili obszary potencjalnego rozwoju poszczególnych regionów Słowacji.

The improvement and acceleration of the development of regions in the European Union is the key issue of many EU documents. Presently the Strategy Europe 2020 is considered the most important document. According to it, the development of regions contributes to intelligent growth, which is one of the EU priorities. One of the factors which directly reflects the development of a region is the business structure and its changes. The business structure in Slovak regions has changed under the influence of the economic crisis. The aim of this paper is to analyze the changes in the business structure in Slovak regions and to assess whether these changes have contributed to the development of the region. The data used in the analysis were mainly obtained from the Slovak Statistics Office and other relevant sources.

Przyspieszenie rozwoju regionów jest jednym z kluczowych zadań Unii Europejskiej. Zgodnie z najważniejszym dokumentem UE w tym zakresie jakim jest Strategia Europa 2020 rozwój regionów wymaga inteligentnego wzrostu, co staje się jednym z priorytetów UE. Jednym z podstawowych czynników, który w sposób bezpośredni odzwierciedla rozwój regionu jest struktura działalności gospodarczej. W artykule przeanalizowano zmiany w strukturze działalności gospodarczej poszczególnych regionów Słowacji w okresie kryzysu oraz oceniono czy zmiany te przyczyniły się do rozwoju tych regionów. Autorzy do przeprowadzenia badań wykorzystali przede wszystkim dane udostępniane przez Główny Urząd Statystyczny Słowacji.

In today’s rapidly changing world the representatives of the Slovak Republic's regions need exact macroeconomics analyses. We can even say that their importance is increasing. Why are there strong fluctuations in economic development? Why there are significant differences between regions of the Slovak Republic and what is the cause? If we want to know the answers, we must examine economic development of regions on more regular basis and in more detail. The importance of autonomous macroeconomic analysis of Slovak regions is that it is the source for identifying strengths and weaknesses of these regions. The aim of this article is to show the importance of macroeconomic analysis of Slovak regions in the context of regional development. The introduction of the article presents the theoretical apparatus of macroeconomic analysis. In the second part of the paper we present results of macroeconomic analysis of eight regions of the Slovak Republic; we focus on the level of regional GDP, foreign direct investment and the economic activity rate of the population.

Autorzy artykułu zwracają uwagę na konieczność analizy makroekonomicznej poszczególnych obszarów Słowacji w kontekście rozwoju regionalnego. Stawiają pytania o to „dlaczego występują tak silne wahania koniunktury gospodarczej na poziomie regionów” oraz dlaczego występują i co powoduje tak duże różnice w rozwoju słowackich regionów?” Odpowiedzi na te pytania należy szukać w systematycznych i szczegółowych badaniach ekonomicznych regionów samorządowych. W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję takich badań oraz przeprowadzono makroekonomiczną analizę ośmiu słowackich regionów koncentrując się na regionalnym PKB, bezpośrednich inwestycjach zagranicznych i aktywności ekonomicznej ludności.
