Together but Apart: University Experience of Jewish Students in the Second Polish Republic

This paper examines the experiences of Jewish university students in Warsaw, Lvov, Wilno and Cracow, focusing on their interactions with each other as well as with other students. These experiences are divided into three categories: daily encounters and mutual relations (or the lack thereof), the vision of the academic community to which the students aspired, and Jewish students' reactions to antisemitism. I argue that for many Jewish students, these daily university experiences both on campuses and beyond strengthened their sense of being outsiders. Having been excluded from most of the general student organizations they had to form their own, which limited their interactions with other students even further, and, above all, strengthened feeling that they were being singled out and victimized.

A seminar in Polish Jewish history at the Institute of Jewish Studies and the Warsaw University directed by Majer Bałaban created a scholarly setting of great consequence, enabling him to train over sixty students of Polish Jewish history according to the University curriculum and his understanding of scholarship. Bałaban equipped them with research skills and teaching methods. He shaped their views on the role of Jewish historians in Poland as they embarked on academic and public careers in the last decade of the Second Polish Republic. Bałaban’s students belonged to a generation with an intimate relation with Polish culture, drawn to the study of Polish literature and history. They enrolled at the University and the Institute of Jewish Studies for a variety of reasons. A university diploma could lead to a career in education, since the Ministry of Education required all teachers in secondary schools to obtain university training. The diverse social backgrounds and individual motivation of Bałaban’s students suggest the wide appeal of the study of Polish Jewish history to Jewish youth in Poland. The analysis of research topics selected by his students, questions they posed in their theses and research methods they applied sheds light on the intellectual framework of these young scholars. Their research and their social activism in the field of education demonstrate Bałaban’s influence on this emerging school of Polish Jewish history. Both the sense of being rooted in Polish culture and a commitment to Jewish nationalism inspired their writings and their career paths as scholars, teachers, and educators.

Seminarium z historii polskich Żydów w Instytucie Judaistyki i w Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, kierowane przez Majera Bałabana, stworzyło niezwykle doniosłą oprawę naukową, umożliwiając mu wyszkolenie ponad sześćdziesięciu studentów historii polskich Żydów zgodnie z programem uniwersyteckim i jego rozumieniem nauki. Bałaban wyposażył ich w umiejętności badawcze i metody nauczania. Kształtował ich poglądy na rolę historyków żydowskich w Polsce, rozpoczynając kariery naukowe i publiczne w ostatniej dekadzie II RP. Uczniowie Bałabana należeli do pokolenia silnie związanego z polską kulturą, pociąganego do studiowania polskiej literatury i historii. Zapisywali się na Uniwersytet i do Instytutu Judaistyki z różnych powodów. Dyplom uniwersytecki może prowadzić do kariery edukacyjnej, ponieważ Ministerstwo Edukacji wymaga od wszystkich nauczycieli szkół średnich odbycia szkolenia uniwersyteckiego. Zróżnicowane pochodzenie społeczne i indywidualna motywacja uczniów Bałabana sugerują, że badanie historii polskich Żydów jest bardzo atrakcyjne dla młodzieży żydowskiej w Polsce. Analiza wybranych przez jego studentów tematów badawczych, pytań stawianych w pracach dyplomowych oraz stosowanych przez nich metod badawczych rzuca światło na ramy intelektualne tych młodych uczonych. Ich badania i działalność społeczna w dziedzinie edukacji pokazują wpływ Bałabana na tę rodzącą się szkołę historii polskich Żydów. Zarówno poczucie zakorzenienia w polskiej kulturze, jak i przywiązanie do żydowskiego nacjonalizmu inspirowały ich pisarstwo i ścieżki kariery jako uczonych, nauczycieli i pedagogów.
