Definition is an important and well-known method of specialized communication in general, but less known is the variation of defining terms depending of different text-types yet. This paper shows a first step in analying the qualitative distribution of types of definition in types of LSP-texts: Aristotelian vs. non-Aristotelian definitions, and real- vs. nominal definitions in parts of four text examples that may be characterised as didactic (Ch. Gueintz 1641), discursive (I. Kant 21787), normative (DIN 2330, 1993) and legal (BGB, 2011; cf. so-called legal definitions). It becomes apparent that real definitions are typical for didactic, normative and legal texts while nominal definitions are characteristic for discursive texts. With respect to the middle of terminological systems, we find Aristotelian definitions in all text types.
