The aim of this paper is to present a coherent understanding of Plato’s third kind. Firstly, I take a critical look at the explanatory procedure proposed by Plato himself to indicate the difficulties it encounters. Then I put forward my own approach, which is to establish two most general criteria of understanding the third kind and to overlap them with one another. As each of them leads to two different interpretations of the third kind, we arrive at four interpretive possibilities, which I then examine one by one as to their internal coherence and sense. Next, I compare them to see to what extent they are compatible with each other. Thus “the best possible” interpretation of the third kind will be chosen, namely the one that can justify most of the attributes Plato wishes his third kind to possess.

The main purpose of this article is to present a new concept of typology and directions of development of management information systems, taking into account current trends. The analysis of literature sources and the authors ‚experience indicate that despite the extensive literature on the subject, the divisions and relations of subsequent generations of systems appearing in it do not correspond to the increasingly complex reality and users’ needs. The presented concept was created as a result of a brainstorming session at the Faculty of Management University of Warsaw and verified at conference on the 50th anniversary of computer science at the Warsaw School of Economics in 2018. In the first approach – the conclusion from the discussion was the division into three main development paths, in the second the assignment of modern, innovative technologies to previously identified directions development. The results of the typology indicate the existence of breakthrough moments – milestones of development, challenges facing the use of information systems in the economy, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the latest technologies.

Głównym celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie nowej, uwzględniającej obecne tendencje koncepcji typologii i kierunków rozwoju systemów informatycznych zarządzania. Analiza źródeł literaturowych i doświadczenia Autorów wskazują, że mimo obszernej literatury na ten temat, występujące w niej podziały i relacje kolejnych generacji systemów nie odpowiadają coraz bardziej złożonej rzeczywistości i potrzebom użytkowników. Prezentowana koncepcja powstała jako wynik burzy mózgów przeprowadzonej na WZ UW i zweryfikowanej konferencji z okazji 50-lecia informatyki w SGH w 2018 roku. W pierwszym podejściu wnioskiem z dyskusji był podział na trzy główne ścieżki rozwojowe, w drugim przypisanie nowoczesnych, innowacyjnych technologii zidentyfikowanym uprzednio kierunkom rozwojowych. Wyniki typologii wskazują na istnienie momentów przełomowych – kamieni milowych rozwoju, wyzwania stojące przed zastosowaniami systemów informatycznych w gospodarce oraz wady i zalety najnowszych technologii.
