Dictionary of proper names, metaphors and connotations: outline of theoretical background

Starting from the vantage point of a connotation theory as well as metaphoric usage of proper names, the presentation discusses the methodological background of the Dictionary of Proper Names, Metaphors and Connotations. This dictionary includes exclusively the Polish names that go beyond their primary function (identification of objects-named) in the texts and public discourse. The matter of connotations typology will be presented, as well as the question of linguistic (or extralinguistic) position of pragmatic-semantic names` values. Although the names of Polish discourse is taken into consideration, some of the names` connotattions seem to be rather universal (e.g. Einstein ‘a genius’, Hitler ‘a war criminal’).

Článek pojednává o metodologickém pozadí slovníku vlastních jmen, jejich metaforického užití a významu. Vychází přitom z konotační teorie a metaforického užívání vlastních jmen. Slovník obsahuje výhradně polská jména, která přesahují rámec jejich hlavní funkce (identifikaci pojmenovaných objektů) v textech a veřejné promluvě. Postihuje dále otázky konotační typologie a rovněž otázku lingvistické (nebo mimolingvistické) pozice hodnot pragmatiky a sémantiky jmen. Ačkoli jména v příspěvku jsou předmětem úvahy polonistické, některé z jmenných konotací se zdají být spíše univerzální (např. Einstein "génius", Hitler "válečný zločinec").

The author describes the main metonymic models within toponymy, anthroponymy and zoonymy. The main definition of metonymy is the traditional regarding in the term of contiguity. In the paper, metonymy is considered in the cognitive linguistic way, as the process of conceptualization. Here, the notion of conceptual contiguity replaces the traditional metonymic relationships. The main metonymic models are: PART FOR WHOLE, POSESSOR FOR PLACE, EVENT FOR PLACE, PLACE FOR PERSON, OCCUPATION FOR PERSON etc. Metonymies as above may lead to ways of conceptualization of space, places, people and animals.
