In the Synodal epoch, Russian Church is faced with a new cultural situation. Secularization has made the old forms of everyday piety not viable. The answer to the question: how is Christian life possible in these circumstances, was suggested in the doctrine of the “penitential-liturgical family” of St. Sergius Mechev. An attempt at the analysis of this doctrine and its church-historical background is the subject of this article.
