This paper attempts to contextualize the creation and use of four terms defining forms of sexual expression commonly referred to as „sadomasochism” or „BDSM”. Drawing on historical sources from the turn of the 20th century and on his contemporary field research, the author demonstrates the entanglement of the language that we use to describe those phenomena in the wider history of creating and contesting the sexual norm.

Artykuł stanowi próbę odpowiedzenia na pytanie, na czym polega problem z wypowiedzeniem i posłużeniem się kategorią „chcianego bólu”. Bazując na badaniach prowadzonych wśród osób praktykujących seksualny masochizm i powołując się na ich doświadczenia, stara się on wykazać, że odpowiedzią na trudność w opisaniu bólu jako czegoś pożądanego są próby mówienia o nim jakby nie był wcale bólem albo opisywania go jako doświadczenia do tego stopnia wykraczającego poza język, że nie dającego się w nim oddać.

An attempt at answering a question about the essence of the problem of expressing and using the category of “desired pain”. By basing himself on research conducted among people practising sexual sadomasochism, and referring to their experiences, the author tries to prove that the response to difficulties with describing pain as something desirable is to be found in attempts at talking about it as if it was not pain at all or describing it as an experience that transcends language to such a degree that it cannot be expressed by the latter.

Poprzez odniesienie się do przykładów współczesnej muzyki punk tworzonej przez transpłciowe artystki, podjęta zostanie próba wskazania jak twórczość ta kontestuje chrononormatywne wzorce dorastania i życia.

An attempt at reflections on connections between a vision of the punk current as youthful rebellion, which one simply grows out of, and theories analysing the alternative “time of life” of queer persons. By referring to examples of contemporary punk music created by transgender female artists the author endeavours to indicate how such creativity contests chrononormative models of growing up and life.

Zagadnienie obecności the author of this article brought the reader closer to the problem faced on both cultural and language levels whenever we try to express our secular identity in categories transcending the binary woman/man division. By referring to Hannah Arendt’s reflections on the relation between power and private life and the possibility of participating in politics Jan Szpilka presented the way in which the question of “gender possession” impacts our possibility of being publicly present.
