Animals as Online Resources for Human Storytelling. Between Exploitation and Anthrozoological Empowerment

The paper deals with online representations of animals and examines the extent to which the digital age, with its media and specific characteristics, influences the representation of animals. The text introduces the basic questions of human animal studies, using Randy Malamud’s virtual animal concept to scrutinise online representations of animals in social media. Based on Spivak’s concept of subalternity, online-animals are discussed as subaltern representations, that are instrumentalised in human story telling: as an economic resource, as a projection surface for individual life writing and identity creation and as a means of social networking. Yet social media are also discussed as a space in which anthrozoological empowerment can take place. Based on Kari Weil’s concept of the contact zone, the virtual animal is discussed as a space of possibilities for a posthuman language that, with the help of digital possibilities of representation, unsettles anthropocentric hegemony.

New forms of life-writing in the digital age broaden the genre of auto/biography, complicating the question of authorship and hybridizing the borders between autobiography, biography and heterobiography. Especially the intermediality and virtuality of social media make the border between fiction and non-fiction fluid and emphasise the social frame (regime of truth) in which every subjectivation (Foucault/Butler) takes place. The editorial underlines the link between normative role models and non-normative subjectivity and discusses life-writing as an important arena of empowerment in which life-writing functions as an anti-hegemonic intervention deconstructing normative identity categories and articulating new forms of subjectivity. In addition, examples of life-writing reacting to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine are discussed in this context as epistemic disruptions which articulate antihegemonic interventions and at the same time create therapeutic potential. Following Olga Tokarczuk’s Noble lecture, contemporary life-writing is summarised in the context of cultural narratology.

Nowe formy życiopisania w erze cyfrowej poszerzają gatunek auto/biografii, komplikując kwestię autorstwa i hybrydyzując granice między autobiografią, biografią i heterobiografią. Zwłaszcza intermedialność i wirtualność mediów społecznościowych sprawiają, że granica między fikcją a literaturą faktu jest płynna oraz podkreślają ramy społeczne (reżim prawdy), w których odbywa się każda subiektywizacja (Foucault/Butler). Artykuł podkreśla związek między normatywnymi modelami ról a nienormatywną podmiotowością i omawia życiopisanie jako ważną arenę upodmiotowienia, w której pisanie o życiu funkcjonuje jako antyhegemoniczna interwencja, która dekonstruuje normatywne kategorie tożsamości i artykułuje nowe formy subiektywności. W tym kontekście omawiane są również przykłady życiopisania reagującego na rosyjską wojnę agresji przeciwko Ukrainie jako epistemiczne zakłócenia, które artykułują antyhegemoniczne interwencje i jednocześnie tworzą potencjał terapeutyczny. W nawiązaniu do wykładu noblowskiego Olgi Tokarczuk, współczesne pisanie o życiu zostaje podsumowane w kontekście narratologii kulturowej.
