This article introduces a new interpretation of the toponym Pfreimd (name of a river and a town in Eastern Bavaria). It is based on the historical spellings Frima and Frimida from 11th century, so far neglected in the former research. The linguistic analysis leads to the reconstruction of a Germanic hydronym *Frīma, from which the place name *Frīmida was derived. This basic form (referring also to the river) – which developed into Pfreimd in German – was taken over into Slavic as *Primьda, which is also the etymon of the Czech place name Přimda.
