Article seeks to analyze the production, reception and accumulation of archival documents by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as its predecessor bodies, between the 18th and 20th centuries and the different ways they were used in this period. From a critical perspective on the function of documents for structuring the National State and analyzing records from Itamaraty itself, we seek to understand the formation of the collection from three perspectives, as a strategic input for the resolution of international disputes, as an element of institutional memory and as part of the national archival heritage.

O artigo busca analisar a produção, recepção e acumulação de documentos arquivísticos pelo Ministério das Relações Exteriores do Brasil, assim como de seus órgãos antecessores, entre os séculos XVIII a XX e as diferentes formas de utilização destes neste período. Sob uma perspectiva crítica acerca da função dos documentos para a estruturação do Estado-Nacional e analisando registros do próprio Itamaraty, procura-se entender a formação do acervo sob três perspectivas, como insumo estratégico para a resolução de litígios internacionais, como elemento de memória institucional e como parte do patrimônio arquivístico nacional.
