RELIGIOUS ROUTES IN SLOVAKIA

100%
EN
We have noticed an uptick in the popularity of cultural routes in recent decades. They combine several tourist attractions into one product, which is more attractive to a potential tourist than the individual tourist elements by themselves. With its Christian foundations, Europe – including Slovakia – has natural predispositions for pilgrimage routes. In addition to the economic effects for a wider range of beneficiaries along the route, they bring knowledge and peace to the tourists/pilgrims, and they have a spiritual dimension. The goals of this article are multidimensional – identification of the relationship between cultural and religious routes, classification of religious routes according to various criteria against the background of the religious structure of the Slovak population, and analysis of the current state of knowledge about eight religious routes identified on the basis of the patronages in their name. The assessment of their condition leads to the conclusion that they have great potential for development. Their development is mainly provided by the Church, various grants and voluntary activities. However, experience also suggests that state support is essential in maintaining and developing the activities of this type of sustainable tourism.

SV. CYRIL A METOD A ICH REFLEXIA V KRAJINE SLOVENSKA

The formation of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition in our history has an impact on the cultural landscape. The aim of the paper is a spatial identification of the cult of Sts. Cyril and Methodius as well as the study of its impact on the landscape of Slovakia. The first step is to identify tangible and intangible features, or, more precisely, cultural landscape elements. In Slovakia, we register in connection with Sts. Cyril and Methodius more than 120 sacral objects (churches, chapels, exterior sculptures). These, together with profane objects (schools, medical facilities) and intangible elements (e.g. street names, squares, organized events), are involved in the transformation of cultural, or, more precisely, religious landscape. The largest number of sacral objects arose after 1989, in the process of modern sacralisation of the landscape, which is typical of countries with renewed religious freedom.

Religiosity and the phenomenon of pilgrimage connected with it, as well as its visualization are strongly fixed in Slovakia. Four decades (1948 – 1989) of political regime did not manage to erase them from the perception of local citizens. Existence of more than 140 pilgrimage centres of different hierarchy level confirms this fact. These nowadays belong with different level of success among centres of pilgrimage. The aim of the article is to evaluate the thematically relevant literature and differences between pilgrimage tourism and religious tourism. In the application part we are oriented on identification, spatial differentiation and typology of catholic pilgrimage centres. Special attention is dedicated to pilgrimage centres with Cyril and Methodius tradition, which together with national Marian pilgrimage sites belong to the most promising pilgrimage sites in the field of religious tourism development in Slovakia.
