The essay presents reflection upon Herbert’s piece entitled “The Telephone”. Due to some text changes made in the poem, ail three versions available in print have been taken into account. “The Telephone” has been considered against the deep background of Herbert’s poetry and some literary works of Thomas Merton and Czeslaw Milosz. According to the interpretation found in the essay, Herbert’s piece appears to be a testimony to poet’s concern with the spiritual shape of the present day. ‘The Telephone” seems to be the expression of poet’s specific and original attitude towards oriental influence on contemporary culture, too.
