The Bibliography documents the achievements of the prehistoric flint mining research team of the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw (PMA). The Committee for Ancient Mining Research was formed in 1985 by Jan Jaskanis, then Director of the Museum, and recruited its members from the archaeologists on the staff of the Stone Age Department of the Museum – Wojciech Borkowski, Witold Migal, Sławomir Sałaciński, Marek Zalewski. They were supported by specialists in draughtsmanship, recording and documentation, and members of Museum administrative department. Works of the Committee focused mainly on the prehistoric flint mining complex at Krzemionki Opatowskie. Excavation units of the Committee investigated the following mines at Krzemionki: no. 7/610 (a chamber mine with its spoil dumps, flint knapping areas and connecting pathways), no. 8/669 (niche mine), no. 9/160 and 10/1441 (features in the northern and central area of the mining complex destroyed by an unauthorised lime quarry), as well as relics of a settlement in the karst funnel area. Parallel to this research, in 1991–2000 the Committee investigated the Rybniki – ‘Krzemianka’ flint mines in NE Poland (Knyszyn Forest), a site with a well preserved above-ground mining landscape and camp sites in the vicinity of a water spring. During the first excavation seasons at Krzemionki the Committee was greatly assisted by Professors Waldemar Chmielewski and Jan Machnik, leading authorities on prehistoric flint mining in Poland, who were invited as consultants by Director Jan Jaskanis. The professors supervised the research activities and by their authority guaranteed an appropriately high level of fieldwork and post-excavation works, helping also deflect reservations of some representatives of archaeologist circles ill-disposed to the State Archaeology Museum team who attributed to themselves the unwarranted monopoly to the study of prehistoric mining. The Committee published its findings from field research and follow up studies in its series ‘Studies in Prehistoric Flint’ (Studia nad Gospodarką Surowcami Krzemiennymi w Pradziejach). The list is also intended as an answer to the claims of some researchers concerning the lack of a satisfactory recapitulation of excavation work by yet another generation of Polish archaeologists and as a reference on source materials for those who disseminate information on the lack of specialist publications. The present Bibliography is a general end report on the activities of the Committee for Ancient Mining Research of the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw during the period 1985–2006. At present the Committee members were appointed to various duties and are at present pursuing other research projects eg, concerned with Neolithic funerary rites and history of archaeology.

The first regular rescue excavation at Złota, comm. Samborzec, distr. Sandomierz, woj. świętokrzyskie, was carried out (1926–1930) under supervision of the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw (J. Żurowski 1934, p. 31; 1935, p. 291) and focused on several archaeological sites identified in the area (Fig. 1–6); rich remains of settlements and cemeteries were discovered, dating from the Neolithic to early Medieval Period (J. Żurowski 1929, p. 4–9; 1934). To verify these findings site ‘Grodzisko II’ at Złota was revisited in 1956 and 1958 by a team from the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw (Fig. 7; Z. Podkowińska, D. Rauhut, Z. Krzak 1959a, p. 237, 239; 1959b, p. 20–21). Investigation at Złota uncovered ie a large settlement (more than one?) of Lublin-Volhynian Culture (LVC) and a number of graves associated with this archaeological unit (Fig. 8–10); these findings are discussed in the present study: grave 390 – Złota, ‘Grodzisko I’ (the 1929 investigation); graves 27, 101, 121, 122 – Złota, ‘Grodzisko II’ (in 1930), and a burial discovered inside a storage pit no. 16 (1956). Grave 390 was situated in W part of the site, between ditches V/3 and II/5, close to a strip of ground dividing ditches V/3 and V/4, in the neighbourhood of storage pit no. 264 associated with LVC (Fig. 8). A 220×160 cm sub-oval grave pit held the remains of an adultus/maturus woman lying in contracted position on her left side, head W (Fig. 11, 12). Grave goods included three vessels set above her head, two copper earrings, a necklace of five Glycymeris and two Veneridae shells found around her cranium, a pendant of a wild pig lower canine, several hundred Cerithium shells, also resting around the skull, and several score Naticidae shells discovered at the left wrist (Fig. 12–16). Finally, a vessel base was found by the right thigh bone. Grave 27, identified in SE region of the investigated area (Fig. 8), was a partly destroyed double burial of an adultus female and child (infans II) discovered at the depth of 30 cm. The woman rested in an extended supine position, head W. Her cranium was sharply twisted back and rested on its left cheek. Arms were flexed at the elbows, forearms upraised, left hand extended towards the child’s knees and the leg bones crossed at the ankles. The child lay in a contracted position on its right side, aligned S (head) – N (legs). It is possible that in this grave the principal burial had been that of the child (a boy – resting on his right side, in this tradition reserved for males), and the woman (mother?) had been placed in the grave with her feet bound. The arrangement of her remains gives the impression that at the time of burial she was still alive and had tried to turn towards (get closer to) the child whose body lay over her head (Fig. 17). According to the field diary of J. Żurowski a vessel (now lost) which had stood by the woman’s right had had a white painted ornament. Grave 101 was discovered in the NW area of the site, in a group with graves 121 and 122 (Fig. 8). Its rectangular 215×95 pit held the remains of an adultus/maturus male resting in contracted position on his right side, head to SW (Fig. 18, 19). Grave goods included fifteen vessels set in two groups: group A (7 vessels) standing before the dead man, set along the E wall of the grave pit, in a line from his head to hips, in the following order: amphora, cup, larger cup, with smaller cup inside, large cup, amphora, amphora. Group B (8 vessels) set at the man’s feet forming the border of the grave pit on its NW side included a pot with four smaller containers within (in the following order: bowl with perpendicular walls, bowl with rounded walls, oval bow, cup), a cup, a bowl with a cup inside (Fig. 20, 21:9.12–15). Other objects included a bracelet of copper wire with a circular pendant of the same material (Fig. 21:16.17) surviving on the man’s left forearm, an antler axe behind the man’s back, an ornamented bone dagger, which presumably originally rested inside the man’s belt (Fig. 21:27), and a set of eleven flint artefacts: five blades, retouched blade, endscraper, retouched truncation, perforator and two trapezes (Fig. 21:18–26). Apart from the trapezes which lay under a vessel in group B all other flints formed a concentration near the man’s left hip, seven of them clustering within a splotch of red pigment (ochre) which has been interpreted as the remains of a container (pouch) of organic material painted red (Fig. 19). The dead man had been provided with beef (a slab of ribs placed in line with the vessel group A) and from a number of animals of undetermined species. The trunk and feet of the man were strewn about with a large quantity of Cerithium shells (Fig. 22); finally, red pigment (presumably ochre) was observed under the skeleton – at cranium, pelvis and feet (Fig. 19). Grave 121, largely lost to ploughing, held the remains of two individuals. In the surviving NE section were found lower limb bones (skeleton A) and a concentration of three vessels. From the arrangement of bones it is possible to determine the position of only the skeleton A, which presumably rested on its right side (male?), head to SE. The arrangement of quite mixed up bones of skeleton B (shin and thigh bones) suggests that it also had rested on its right side (Fig. 23, 24). The vessel concentration resting at the thigh and knees of skeleton A included a large cup within which were found a smaller cup and an amphora (Fig. 25). Grave 122 produced no human remains but held eleven vessels as well as flint objects and some animal bones (Fig. 26–28), resting in an arrangement similar as in grave 101. In SE part of the grave was found a concentration of four vessels: a wide-necked pot containing a hollow--footed beaker, a small cup, and an amphora. In N and NW area of the grave was a second concentration of seven vessels: an amphora with a small cup inside, another amphora, large cup, large cup, amphora, and smaller cup (Fig. 29). Flint finds included three blades, a retouched truncation and a retouched blade (Fig. 30); animal bones included ribs of a horse, lying in the same line as the vessel concentration in the SE part of the grave, and a pile of sheep/goat, pig, cattle and bird bones found by the second vessel group; the entire grave was strewn about with Cerithium shells (Fig. 27, 28). Storage pit no. 16 held a skeleton of a woman (early adultus) lying in a contracted position on her left side, head to S (Fig. 32). There were no grave furnishings. The fill of the pit overlying the skeleton produced fragments of LVC pottery. Out of all post-linear groups in Poland LVC is represented by the largest number of human burials which provide a substantial basis for reconstructing the funerary rite. Jointly with graves discovered in Volhynia and Podolia (Ukraine) some 140 or so burials of this culture unit are recorded (A. Zakościelna 2006b, p. 89). The graves recorded at Złota were richly furnished with diverse goods (Table 1), which is consistent with the burial rite noted in LVC. At the same time the inventory produced by grave 101 is of unprecedented richness. This burial of an adult male was accompanied by a set of no less than thirty items, seven categories of raw material in all: 15 pottery vessels, 11 flint objects, bone dagger, antler axe, two copper objects, abundant Cerithium shells and ochre. Another comparatively richly furnished grave is no 122 – a cenotaph – which judging by the presence of exceptionally fine flint objects may also be interpreted as a male ‘burial’. The female grave 390, although furnished with a smaller inventory, cannot be said to be poor either. This is mainly because of the presence in this burial of exotic imported shells. Their value and nature of a status symbol is indicated by the fact that so far such shells have not been recorded in any other grave in LVC. Their presence testifies to wide-ranging contacts of LVC communities with the environment of Eneolithic cultures on the Black Sea. Such links may also be indicated by the cenotaph no. 122, a form of burial very rage in LVC. At the present stage of analysis of Eneolithic evidence from Złota it is extremely difficult to undertake clarification and interpretation of many questions relating to the grave assemblages presented here. One of such issues is the location of the graves in relation to storage pits in LVC settlement/settlements. To all appearances feature 390 at ‘Grodzisko I’ was a solitary grave situated within the settlement. Grave 390 (and possibly, other, no longer existing graves) in this part of the site are attributed to the classic phase, presumably the period of liveliest settlement activity by LVC people. Similar dating should be given also to grave 27 and the burial inside pit 16 at ‘Grodzisko II’, and also to solitary graves discovered in proximity of settlement features. The cemetery (ie graves 101, 121 and 122) would have been established at the onset of phase III (late phase) on the margin of the settlement catchment at a time when the settlement was on the way to decline. More far-reaching conclusions will have to wait until the evidence from Złota has been analysed in full and the chronology of spatial development of the settlement reconstructed. From evidence published so far in piecemeal fashion it is known that the settlement had been of substantial duration. Some of the material recovered so far is quite early and may be linked to phase I (pre-classic) (Z. Podkowińska 1953, pl. VII:2.3), followed by material – apparently the most abundant – from the classic phase (Z. Podkowińska 1953, pl. I–III); late phase is represented by the presence in the pottery of eg Scheibenhenkel handles (J. Kamieńska, J. K. Kozłowski 1990, pl. 31:1.4). Typical for phase B in Bodrogkeresztúr Culture (cf M. Kaczanowska 1986, p. 43, 46), Scheibenhenkel handles noted in LVC deposits probably correspond to horizon IIIb. It would appear that at Złota we have the complete developmental sequence of LVC culture. All the graves from Złota were provided with radiocarbon determinations (Table 2, fig. 33). The date obtained for the burial in storage pit no. 16 (5500±40 BP) fits within the range of 4370–4320 BC (52.5%, for sigma 1) and 4450–4310 BC (83.0% for sigma 2). These values may correspond in relative chronology to early phase of LVC (S. Kadrow, A. Zakościelna 2000, fig. 44; A. Zakościelna 2006, p. 89). The only problem is that featuring no grave goods the burial is linked to LVC only on the basis of materials associated with this culture discovered within the layer overlying the skeleton (Z. Podkowińska 1959b, p. 15–17). As such culture attribution of this burial is at once plausible but problematic. The radiocarbon date matches the upper chronological confines of the classic phase of Malice Culture (S. Kadrow 1996, p. 68), also documented at Złota in the form of settlement remains. On the other hand there is evidence to postulate very early settlement of LVC at the site basing on the presence of pestle-like vessels in pits 40 and 129a at ‘Grodzisko I’ (Z. Podkowińska 1953, Pl. VII:2.3); these forms are parallel to ceramic forms noted in the Transylvanian group Iclod (Gh. Lazarovici 1991, p. 31). Radiocarbon dates obtained for grave 27 (5270±40 BP) are 4170–4090 BC (27.6% for sigma 1) and 4180–3980 BC (78.9% for sigma 2). This corresponds to the chronology of (classic) phase II in LVC (S. Kadrow, A. Zakościelna 2000, fig. 44; A. Zakościelna 2006, p. 90). Unfortunately, also in case of this grave the dating cannot be corroborated by material finds as its grave furniture has yet to be discovered. Graves 390 (5170±40 BP), 101 (5060±30 BP), and 122 (5020±40 BP) survive complete with intact set of grave furnishings. The result obtained for grave 390 is 4000–3950 BC (50.7% for sigma 1) and 4050–3930 BC (86.3% for sigma 2). This value of radiocarbon dating places this feature in phase II of development of LVC, which is consistent with the dating of the grave inventory and the location of the burial within the settlement. The determination obtained for grave 101 is 3950–3830 BC (54.1% for sigma 1) and 3960–3780 BC (95.4% for sigma 2) whereas grave 122 in its neighbourhood produced the following respective values: 3940–3870 BC (33.7% for sigma 1) and 3950–3700 BC (95.4% for sigma 2). These determinations suggest that both features should be placed late in phase II of LVC, while the formal and stylistic attributes of their ceramics recall similarity with material noted in phase A in Bodrogkeresztúr Culture, which corresponds to horizon IIIa of late phase of LVC. As such, the dates obtained would be too early. Grave assemblages discussed here represent but a small fragment of the history of human settlement in sites ‘Grodzisko I’ and ‘II’ at Złota. A staggering amount of archaeological material still awaits analysis and interpretation, in particular, rich evidence on multiple stages of occupation by Danubian folk, first of all, the fortified settlement of LVC. Over long decades this record has continued to be known only from a small number of finds which had been published at random when they were needed to support diverse concepts. Comprehensive analysis and publication of the material from Złota is urgently needed as it represents a vast body of data which could prove of key importance for resolving many vital issues related to the Neolithic and Eneolithic in Poland.

The artefact was found in 2018 near the Cultural Park in Powsin in Warsaw-Ursynów (Fig. 1) and transferred to the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw. It is a boat-shaped stone axe made of amphibolite (Fig. 2–4). An indentation remaining after a drilled hole is located on its butt, while a circular trace left by a partially drilled hole can be found on its upper surface. The dimensions of the artefact are: length 90 mm, width at the butt 50 mm, width at the blade 20 mm, thickness 37 mm, diameter of the hole on the butt 15 mm, diameter of the partially drilled hole 14 mm. The axe belongs to subtype IB (reduced forms) in the typology of J. Libera and J. Sobieraj (2016, p. 414), associated with the early phases of the Corded Ware culture. This subtype corresponds to type B in the classification of P. V. Glob (1944, pp. 20–21), K. W. Struve (1955, pp. 15–16), and K. H. Brandt (1967, pp. 50–53) and type B2 after P. Włodarczak (2006, p. 33).

W połowie 5 tys. p.n.e. doszło do wielkiego – neolitycznego przełomu w życiu społeczności zamieszkujących obecne ziemie polskie. Spowodowały go grupy emigrujące z południa – tzw. kultur z cyklu wstęgowego i lendzielsko-polgarskiego. W gospodarce pojawia się stabilne osadnictwo, uprawa roli, hodowla udomowionych zwierząt, umiejętność tkania materiałów, garncarstwo. Pierwszą rodzimą kulturą rolniczą na Mazowszu była kultura pucharów lejkowatych, datowana na drugą połowę 4 i pierwsza połowę 3 tys. p.n.e. Wiązała się z nią idea megalityczna w obrządku pogrzebowym. Grobowiec o konstrukcji składającej się z bruków i obstaw kamiennych odkryto w Rybnie koło Sochaczewa. W 3 tys. p.n.e. egzystowała na Mazowszu i Podlasiu ludność kultury ceramiki grzebykowo-dołkowej o tradycyjnej gospodarce naturalnej, w której dostrzegalne są elementy neolityczne, głównie ceramika, niektóre narzędzia. W drugiej połowie tego tysiąclecia pojawiły się na ziemiach polskich koczownicze plemiona tzw. kultury amfor kulistych, zajmujące się głównie hodowlą zwierząt, często zmieniające miejsca pobytu, po których pozostały groby skrzynkowe zbudowane z kamieni z bardzo bogatym wyposażeniem zmarłych w naczynia, narzędzia, ozdoby i szczątki zwierzęce. Inną koczowniczą kulturą zarejestrowaną na Mazowszu była kultura ceramiki sznurowej, datowana na drugą połowę 3 i początki 2 tys. p.n.e. Pozostały po niej głównie cmentarzyska, wśród których dominują kurhany. Podstawą bytu ludności tej kultury była również hodowla zwierząt. Zamieszkiwano obozowiska, bardzo rzadko większe osady. Przyjmuje się, że wojownicze gromady pasterzy kultury ceramiki sznurowej doprowadziły do zagłady miejscowych, starszych populacji, a ich tradycje przetrwały do wczesnej epoki brązu. Neolityzacja Mazowsza stanowiła jeden z elementów podstawowych przemian w egzystencji i rozwoju ówczesnych społeczności i tym samym bardzo znaczący etap w rozwoju cywilizacyjnym naszych ziem.

In the middle of the 5 millennium B.C. the great – Neolithic turn in life of communities inhabiting the present Polish territories took place. It was caused by groups emigrating from the south – of the so-called Linear Band and Lengyel- Polgár culture cycle. Economy was marked by emerging of stable settlement, farming, husbandry of domestic animals, competence in weaving textiles, making of pottery. The first indigenous farming culture in Masovia was the Funnel Beaker culture dating in the second half of the 4th and first half of the 3rd millennium B.C. It was associated with the megalith idea in burial rites. A tomb constructed of paving-stones and stone settings was discovered in Rybno close by Sochaczew. In the 3rd millennium B.C. in Masovia and Podlasie were present communities of Pitted Ware culture of traditional natural economy in which some Neolithic elements may be noticed, for the most part ceramics and some tools. In the second half of the same millennium on the territory of Poland appeared nomadic tribes of the so-called Globular Amphora culture with economy based on raising a variety of livestock, often changing dwelling-places, known from its burials in cists constructed of stone, accompanied by a variety of very rich grave offerings including vessels, tools, ornamentation and animal parts. Another nomadic culture noticed in Masovia was the Corded Ware culture dating to the second half of the 3rd and the beginning of the 2nd millennium B.C. It left mainly cemeteries with earth tumuli dominating among them. Population followed the same economical pattern of keeping livestock, inhabiting temporary camps, very rare bigger settlements. It is assumed that the warlike shepherds’ groups led to annihilation of local, older populations, and their traditions survived until the Early Bronze Age. Neolithization of Masovia constitutes one of the elements of essential transformations taking place in the existence and development of contemporary communities and thus a significant stage in the development of civilization on our territories.

Site 1 at Kownacica, Sobolew Commune, Garwolin County, Mazovian Voivodship, is situated 2.5 km south of the village of Kownacica and the Promnik River, a right-bank tributary of the Vistula (Fig. 1). It is located in the Żelechów High Plain, a 1850-square-kilometer-large mesoregion in the South Podlasie Lowland – a part of the Central Polish Lowlands (J. Kondracki 1994, p. 143–144). Presently, it is an agricultural region, interspersed with small patches of woodland. The site was discovered in 1999 as a result of a fieldwalking survey in Sobolew Commune. Artefacts made of banded and Świeciechów flints as well as fragments of pottery and daub associated with the Funnel Beaker Culture (FBC) and Early-Neolithic settlement were collected from the surface. The site was systematically destroyed by illegal sand mining, which was confirmed during inspections in 2005, 2006 and 2007 (Fig. 2). Rescue excavations were carried out between 11 September and 5 October 2007. They were supervised by Barbara Sałacińska and Izabela Chojnowska acting on behalf of the State Archaeological Museum and consulted by Sławomir Sałaciński. The main task was to determine the state of preservation of the site. The excavations encompassed various areas of the site, both destroyed by sand extraction as well as the ones undamaged by it but subjected to deep disc harrowing (Fig. 3). In the eastern part of the site, two designated areas were excavated: Trench I (10×20 m) in which 15 features were explored (Fig. 3–5), and Trench II (approx. 5×20 m) with seven explored features (Fig. 3, 7, 8). Between July 2005 and the beginning of August 2007, this part of the site was destroyed by an illegal sand mining operation for construction purposes, which created an extraction pit measuring 800 square meters on the surface and up to 2 m in depth (Fig. 2). During the archaeological research, it was referred to as a “contemporary dig”. A part of its profiles with a total length of 77.5 m was cleaned, and one feature was exposed (Fig. 6). Two designated excavation areas were explored in the western part of the site – Trench IIIA (4×5 m) and Trench IIIB (approx. 10×3×3× 7.6 m), in which two features were unearthed (Fig. 9, 10). This part of the site, overgrown with a pine and birch forest, was destroyed by numerous sand pits. In the course of the excavations, a new sand pit was recorded (sand pit I/2007). Parts of its walls with a total length of 23.8 m were cleaned, and one feature was uncovered. An inspection of the surface was carried out in the north-western part of the site. Recovered material is dated from the Late Mesolithic, through the Early Neolithic and to the Funnel Beaker Culture. In total, an area of 348.6 square meters was explored, and 101.3 linear meters of profiles were cleaned within the range of the present-day destruction. 26 features of various character were found, including a feature of the Trzciniec Culture (Fig. 11), 11 FBC features (including three postholes; Fig. 12–14, 16–19, 21–23), four features of undefined chronology (including two postholes; Fig. 15, 20), two contemporary features (including one fireplace), and eight natural features (archaeological material was found in a secondary deposit in four of them). 164 flint artefacts, 1111 pottery sherds, a stone artefact (grinder) and 240 pieces of daub, as well as a few small, burnt bone fragments were obtained. The majority of the archaeological material belongs to the FBC (1023 pieces of pottery, 60 flint artefacts). Several flint artefacts (10 specimens) can be attributed to the Late Mesolithic. Furthermore, 10 flint artefacts and 12 pottery fragments are associated with the Early Neolithic, with cultures of southern origin. Moreover, 63 sherds of the Trzciniec Culture, five pottery fragments of the Lusatian Culture and two modern sherds were acquired. Six sherds and 64 flint artefacts were not defined in terms of their chronology. The FBC pits from Kownacica were divided into several categories based on their shape: close to circular – feature 10 (Fig. 16), close to oval – feature 25 (Fig. 23), close to kidney-shaped – features 9, 17, 18 (Fig. 12, 21), and irregular – features 5, 11, 19 (Fig. 13, 17, 22). Almost all pits (nos. 5, 9–11, 17, 19, 25) had basin-shaped cross-sections – features 5, 9–11, 17, 19, 25 (Fig. 12, 13, 16, 17, 22, 23). Only the cross-section of pit 18 was irregular (Fig. 21). The FBC postholes were irregular in shape, while their cross-sections were bag-shaped – features 7 and 14 (Fig. 14, 19), and triangular or V-shaped – feature 13 (Fig. 18). Pits (5, 9, 11, 17, 18, 19, 25) and postholes (7 and 13) of the FBC were explored to their bases. They were usually from 15 to 35 cm deep. The only exceptions were feature 10 with a depth of up to 65 cm and feature 14 (a posthole) with a thickness of 55 cm. Based on the dimensions of their plans at the level of discovery, the FBC features from Kownacica can be divided into: small – up to 100 cm long (pits 5, 11, 19, 25 and postholes 7, 13, 14), medium – reaching 100–150 cm (feature 18) and large – above 150 cm (features 9, 10, 17). The feature of the Trzciniec Culture was irregular both in plan and in cross-section (Fig. 11). The fills of the FBC pits were homogeneous or poorly diversified and contained scarce flint and ceramic material. There were no stratigraphic systems noted between features. In the pits and various layers, medium-sized and small clumps of daub were discovered but there were no traces of construction. No daub debris, which could be a remnant of ground structures as discovered at some of the FBC settlements in the Polish Lowlands, was found. However, the presence of daub fragments suggests that clay was used for construction purposes to some extent and serves as a premise for a hypothesis about the existence of ground structures in the FBC settlement in Kownacica. 164 flint artefacts were separated based on their different chronology: Late Mesolithic (10 artefacts made of erratic flint, including one burnt; Fig. 24, 28:1–8, Table 1, 4), Early Neolithic cultures of southern origin (10 artefacts made of chocolate flint, including three burnt; Fig. 24, 28:9–15, Table 1, 2, 4), the FBC (39 artefacts made of banded flint, including four burnt, nine of Świeciechów flint, including one burnt, 12 of Volhynian flint; Fig. 24–27, 29, 30, 31:1–8, Table 1–4), and unspecified with regards to archaeological culture (47 specimens made of erratic flint, including two burnt, 10 of chocolate flint, including three burnt, 10 of banded flint, five of Świeciechów flint, and 12 of undefined burnt flint; Fig. 24, Table 2, 4). With 35 specimens (58.33%), banded flint dominates among the material associated with the Funnel Beaker Culture (60 pieces in total). Next is Volhynian flint with 12 (20%) specimens and Świeciechów flint with eight (13.33%). Several re-burnt artefacts were also isolated: four (6.67%) exemplars made of banded flint and one (1.67%) specimen made of Świeciechów flint (Fig. 25). A preference for a specific type of raw material is visible in the FBC flint assemblage: banded flint was used mainly for making axes and splintered pieces, Volhynian flint – blade tools and splintered pieces (Fig. 26, 27). Only 16 flint artefacts (and only three tools) were found inside the features. The major part of the accumulated flint material (148 pieces) was discovered in the layers outside of the archaeological features. 54 specimens were separated from the flint assemblage from Kownacica, among them: eight cores (Table 1, Fig. 28:1–5), 17 splintered pieces (Table 2, Fig. 29:3, 30:1.2), an axe (Table 3, Fig. 29:1), a part of an axe near the butt (Table 3, Fig. 29:2), three fragments of half-finished axes (Table 3, Fig. 30:3), and 24 blade and flake tools (Table 4), including three scrapers (Fig. 28:7.8, 31:8), three endscrapers on retouched blades (Fig. 28:9.10, 31:2), a truncated blade with a retouched blade (Fig. 31:6), four fragments of retouched blades (Fig. 31:3–5), two fragments of endscrapers (Fig. 31:1), a fragment of a borer (Fig. 31:7), a burin and a fragment of a burin (Fig. 28:11.12), a trapeze (Fig. 28:13), two blades and two fragments of partially retouched blades (Fig. 28:14.15, 30:4), three retouched flakes. Among 1,111 fragments of ceramics, 1,023 sherds of the FBC pottery were identified (Fig. 32, 33). 12 fragments are associated with older Neolithic settlement (Fig. 28:16), 63 sherds with the Trzciniec Culture, five sherds with the Lusatian Culture. Two fragments represent modern pottery, while six sherds have not been defined in terms of archaeological culture. Only 132 sherds of the FBC pottery were discovered inside the features. The FBC pottery is heavily fragmented (Fig. 32, 33). Not one whole vessel was found. A funnel beaker (Fig. 33:16), a beaker with a short, funnel-shaped, everted neck (Fig. 32:17), and a rim of a collared flask (Fig. 32: 3) were partially reconstructed. Amphorae (Fig. 33:4.12), pots (Fig. 33:2.5.6) and shallow bowls (Fig. 32:13, 33:14) were also identified. The pottery from Kownacica is characterized by a careful preparation of the clay body, the finish of the surface and its hardness. It is also well-fired. The exterior surfaces are light brown, brown, and dark grey, while the interior surfaces are brown and grey. The walls of the vessels were very carefully smoothed – matt or burnished. A deliberate coarsening of the external surface was noted on five sherds. The body was tempered with a mixture of fine-grained sand and chamotte, evenly distributed throughout the entire clay body. The pottery is well-fired, with one- or two-colour cross-sections. Vessels were decorated in three zones: mainly from the outside, under the rim, less often on the very rim and/or on the body. One- and two-element motifs in a horizontal arrangement placed below the edge of the rim constitute the prevailing decoration on the vessels. Imprinting is the dominant method employed for ornamentation.(Fig. 32:1. 2.4.16.18, 33:8.11). Appliqué decorations were used less often (Fig. 33:1. 2.5.6.16). Incisions (Fig. 32:5), furrow stitch (Fig. 32:8.9) and double cord impressions (Fig. 32:10) occur sporadically. One whole and four fragments of FBC spindle whorls were found in Kownacica. Only one of the fragments was recovered from an FBC feature (no. 17); one was discovered on the surface, and the others in the layers outside of the archaeological features. Two of them are convex and flat (Fig. 31:11), one – lenticular (Figure 31:9), one – conic (Fig. 31:10) in shape. One could not be classified because of its state of preservation. The clay whorls, similar to the FBC pottery, were made of a perfectly prepared clay body mixed with mineral temper composed of fine-grained sand and chamotte. They have carefully smoothed, light brown surfaces, sometimes slightly burnished. The cross-section are one or two-coloured. Pottery from Kownacica forms a homogeneous assemblage and shares characteristics with the material of the south-eastern group of the FBC. Based on the style of the ceramics, the settlement in Kownacica can be associated with the classical phase of the south-eastern FBC group (B. Burchard, S. Jastrzębski, J. Kruk 1991; J. Kruk, S. Milisauskas 1981, 1983, 2018), linked with the phases Bronocice II and IIIA dated to the period from 3650 BC to 3400/3300 BC (P. Włodarczak 2006, p. 33, 58). Analogies to the pottery from Kownacica can be found among the vessels originating from the loess settlements of the south-eastern FBC and dated to the phase Bronocice II, e.g., from Klementowice B, Puławy County (J. Kowalczyk 1957), Pliszczyn 9, Lublin County (T. J. Chmielewski, E. Mitrus 2015, p. 62–82), Złota Nad Wawrem, Sandomierz County (B. Matraszek 2001), Modlnica, Kraków County (A. Zastawny, P. Włodarczak, B. Grabowska 2011) Zawarża, Pińczów County (A. Kulczycka-Leciejewiczowa 2002b), Pawłosiów 52 (M. Rybicka, D. Król, J. Rogoziński 2014) and Skołoszów 31, both Jarosław County (J. Rogoziński 2014). Making the distinction between two patterns of settlement: loess and para-‘lowland’ was extremely important for acquiring knowledge of the FBC in Lesser Poland. A presentation of and a rich discussion on this matter can be found in the literature on the subject (B. Burchard, S. Jastrzębski, J. Kruk 1991, p. 95–98; J. Kruk, S. Milisauskas 1999, p. 109–117; S. Kadrow 2009; 2010; M. Nowak 2009, p. 325–344). Some of the settlements located in the sandy areas of Lesser Poland represent a period contemporary with the older stage of the classical phase from the loess areas – linked with the phase Bronocice II. This is probably related to the economic activity of human groups from settlement centers from loess regions (B. Burchard, S. Jastrzębski, J. Kruk 1991, p. 96; J. Kruk, S. Milisauskas 1999, p. 117). This economic model is represented by the analyzed FBC settlement in Kownacica, the settlement at Szumów 10, Puławy County (P. Zawiślak 2013) and probably at Białobrzegi 5, Łańcut County (S. Czopek, S. Kadrow 1988; K. Karski 2014). Rescue excavation in Kownacica confirmed the existence of a Neolithic FBC settlement at the site. Types, morphology and technology of clay vessels as well as artefacts made of southern and south-eastern siliceous rocks (banded, Świeciechów, Volhynian flints) indicate that the inhabitants of the settlement were in direct contact with the communities of the south-eastern FBC group, or that it was founded by visitors in possession of the products manufactured in the South.

Site 5 at Tominy lies to the north of the Sandomierz Highland (Fig. 1) on the south-eastern edge of the Foreland of Iłża (J. Kondracki 2002, fig. 38; M. Szeliga, A. Zakościelna 2009, p. 9), on an elevation built of glacial sands and boulder clay (Fig. 2). Traces of occupation were identified at 178–184 m ASL. In the immediate vicinity of the site are found carbonate rocks of Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian and Oxfordian) age. Discovered by Janusz Budziszewski in 1982 the site was investigated by test trenches in 2004 (Aleksandra Sujecka and Józef Bednarczyk) and attributed to the Funnel Beaker Culture. In 2006 it came under an area excavation (Zbigniew Miecznikowski and Sławomir Sałaciński; Fig. 3, 4). Also investigated that year were nearby sites 6 and 17 at Tominy with a multi-phase culture deposit (Marcin Szeliga, Anna Zakościelna, Tadeusz Wiśniewski). The main aim of the archaeological excavation made at Tominy 5 was to salvage the area’s archaeology before it came under development associated with the construction of a ring road for Ożarów. A total of 10000 m2 were investigated, identifying 127 archaeological features (Fig. 5, 9–17). The earliest occupation is documented by flint and pottery finds datable to the Early Neolithic attributed to Linear Pottery Cultures. This is material analogical to the one excavated at Tominy 6, published by M. Szeliga and A. Zakościelna (2009), the site of a Linear Band Pottery Culture settlement from its Musical Note Pottery phase and from the stage transitional to Želiezovce Phase. Some of the finds from Tominy 6 suggest strong links with the circle of eastern Linear Band Pottery Cultures from the Slovak-Hungarian border zone, manifested by pottery ornamentation styles and objects made of Carpathian obsidian (M. Szeliga, A. Zakościelna 2009, p. 14). Later occupation during the Neolithic is documented by a fragment of a Funnel Beaker Culture settlement, and later still, by a small number of features attributed to the Early Bronze Mierzanowice Culture, and traces of occupation by the people of Trzciniec Culture and Lusatian Culture. The assemblage recovered at Tominy 5 is dominated by pottery (Fig. 33–41) and flint artifacts (Fig. 20–32, Table 1–3) of the Funnel Beaker Culture. A more outstanding archaeological feature (No. 23) associated with this culture had a sub-rectangular plan, 100×150 m at the level of detection, and a depth of 100 cm (Fig. 6–8). It yielded a funnel beaker, a pottery fragment, an amphora, a clay spindlewhorl and flint flakes. Other Funnel Beaker Culture features (e.g., Nos. 53, 54, 90–93) are typical household pits, often recorded in settlements of this culture. The settlement identified at Tominy 5 belongs to the south-eastern group of Funnel Beaker Culture which resided in the region between 3900/3800 and 2900/2800 BC (P. Włodarczak 2006, p. 57–59; A. Uzarowicz-Chmielewska, B. Sałacińska 2013, p. 232). An even more outstanding feature was No. 68 (Fig. 18, 19). It appeared in plan as a concentration of brown-yellow clay interspersed with limestone rubble and broken flint nodules. At the level of detection it had a width of 280 cm and a depth of 260 cm. Because of the shape of its cross-section and the presence of limestone and flint rubble in its fill the feature was interpreted tentatively as a pit left behind from flint extraction. Evidence on shaft mining of siliceous rocks during the Early Bronze Age was identified at nearby Ożarów and Gliniany by Stefan Krukowski (1890–1982) and an investigation was made in early 1980s by J. Budziszewski (1980, p. 601–605; 2008, p. 34, 36). Other features of similar description identified at Tominy 5 (Nos. 39, 45, 78 and 79) were much less well preserved. By J. Budziszewski (Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw) feature no. 68 is interpreted tentatively as a natural, karstic, formation. This view has been supported by the geomorphologist Piotr Szwarczewski (University of Warsaw, Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies), presumably a karstic funnel-shaped sink hole. The fieldwork at Tominy has brought in new data on the prehistoric settlement in the foreland of the Sandomierz Highland. The post-excavation analysis of the archaeological record from site 5 is also a complement to other published assemblages from the Ożarów ring road.
