Nowy nagrobek św. Wojciecha w katedrze św. Wita w Pradze

The author recalls the circumstances of the origin of the new tombstone of St. Wojciech (Adalbert). In the wake of the removal of the Renaissance sepulchral chapel, which took place due to the addition of the neo-Gothic western part of the cathedral during the nineteenth century, St. Wojciech lost his architecturally shaped final resting place. This situation remained unchanged until recently when a new tombstone, the work of Eva and Bogumił Fanta, was placed in the cathedral. The tombstone is situated along the axis of the neo-Gothic nave and is composed of a smooth marble slab displaying stylised bronze bishopls insignia. The marble is encircled by a bronze slat, which bears an inscription; the surface of the slat is polished, and the letters are covered with patina. Keeping in mind the current functioning of the cathedral, the chapter o f St. Vitus and the Archbishop of Prague decided that the crypt underneath the tombstone o f St. Wojciech will remain empty. The modern tombstone thus reminds us of the past and evokes it, but does not try to create an illusion of direct contact with it.
