Obecność romantyzmu: co i jak czyta Danny Smiřický?

The main purpose of the article is to identify and recognize ways of reinterpretating romantic heritage throughout a wide historical and literary context. The thesis concentrates on a novel written by Josef Škvorecký, entitled Příběh inženýra lidských duší , which deals with the themes of the history of emigration, totalitarianism and literature, which can be helpful in elucidating unexplained experiences. It is necessary to consider dependent relationships and connections between history and older literature. The main character of Škvoreský’s story, Danny Smiřický, is a Czech emigrant working as a lecturer at a Canadian university. The experience of reading proves to him just how universal and significant literature can be. The literary works of Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne become the way of “translating” Czech experience with communism for Canadian students. An hour of literature range into an hour of history.

The main intention of the presented article was to find and indicate thoughts connected to the dissident tradition of Czech 20th century history. The generational experience regarding the „drunken festival” of Prague Spring and brutal intervention of „fraternal help” have influenced a non-official side of Czech modern culture. Literary works, as well as publicist activities in the period 1968–1989 prove that the political opposition has become a very important subject for many writers. In the article, I am referring to above indicated novel written by Pavel Kohout. In his text, the writer, known as one of the most important founding members and architects of the informal civic initiative called Charter 77, has managed to describe an atmosphere of Czech „normalization” and nonofficial ways of rebelling, fighting against the communistic ideology in Czechoslovakia before the Velvet Revolution in November 1989.

Discussion about the borders restricting (unavoidable today) aestheticization of memory about the Holocaust experience is still valid – in the article are recalled some different strategies of remembering the Holocaust in the art using photography. Two of the artistic projects (Powidoki by Zbigniew Libera and Pocztówki z Auschwitz by Paweł Szypulski) are using authentic photographs to initialize the discussion about trivialization of image, removing it from its original context and, at the same time, “blunting” the sensitivity of the recipient. The other two works (Auschwitz, co ja tu robię by Mikołaj Grynberg and Miejsca nieparzyste by Elżbieta Janicka) are suspended between conversation and silence (two classic poles of memory about the Holocaust). All of these works are disputing with “fixed” models and imaginary experiences, deconstructing pathos, they are talking about the blurring memories and manipulating with memory, about competition of different historic narrations and attempts at overtaking the past, passing the traumatic experiences of the war and the Holocaust to the next generations.

The article presents opinions related to university literature teaching and the necessity (justified or not) of adapting teaching methods to the abilities of a modern recipient. It also concentrates on the problem with defining new generation of students, through the prism of digital technology. However, the fundamental issue to consider, is the problem of academic literary education, which often does not raise enthusiasm among students. Many of them are treating the subject as not practical enough. I also refer to my own teaching experience; expressing the point of view that literature defends itself, besides lacking strict rules of modern education and the need to diversify students discussions using innovative, activating methods. Its interpretation is, however, dependent on contemporary context. The article, notes the common change in reading, education and historical memory, presents the necessity of preserving traditional educational paths – focused on dialogue and discussion about the reader’s experience.

Artykuł, zwracając uwagę na przemiany czytelnictwa, edukacji i historycznej pamięci, prezentuje stanowisko wyrażające potrzebę powrotu do klasycznych ścieżek edukacyjnych – dialogu i dyskusji o doświadczeniu czytelniczym.
