The article focuses on the concept of music as a universal language. It examines the role of music in communication between artists suffering from various mental disorders and their environment. Tracing the history of Pink Floyd’s success, the authors highlight the case of Syd Barrett, whose life oscillated between two poles – creative effectiveness and artistic lethargy. By examining the course of lives of such iconic figures as Skip Spence, Charles Mingus, Daniel Johnston, and John Lennon, the article formulates a hypothesis connecting musicality, mental disorders of various origins, and the usage of substances such as LSD.
