The author contemplates about the power structure of a fairly small territory delimited with Libice in the north, Kolin in the south, Pňov in the west and Ohař in the east during the pre-Hussite era using almost all available sources. The first volume of a large study focuses on monastýry demesnes, not only their scope and changes, but namely their role within the power network in the region in interaction with the town of Kolin, with the gentry and serfs. The fact that the research covered a period from the 10th till the early 15th centuries made it possible to see certain dynamics in the formation of this region in spite of the lack of sources.

The study offers a regional look into Bohemian history on the example of a microregion in the vicinity of several key sovereign centres in close proximity to Prague (ca 20 km W): Tetín’s fortified settlement, the provostry of St John under the Rock (Skala), Castle Tetín and the town of Beroun. Since it follows the history of the region from the Early Middle Ages until after the beginning of the Hussite revolution, it allows for the understanding of the changing strategies, which the sovereign used in its control. In the same way, it considers a group little investigated – the lower nobility, which played an important role in this region. Here, the author focuses particularly on the question of their seats, properties, relation to the sovereign and to the question of their offices. Finally, there is an attempt to summarize the very meagre data on the situation of the serfs in the 14th century. As such, it is a certain prolegomena to the further research of the region in the Hussite Period.

This study emerged with the aim of confronting the picture of the Bohemians in the early medieval Czech sources before 1200 AD with the perceptions in documents which originated outwith the territories of Bohemia and Moravia. It is evident that the picture of the Bohemians in Imperial documents developed from that of the image of a tributary ethnic group, living beyond the boundaries of the Empire up to the concept of the Czech Prince as one of the Princes of the Holy Empire, who stood at the head of a specific ethnic group which is always placed alongside the „Teutones“, yet sometimes at the same level as the Bavarians and Saxons.

In the second part of the study the author continues the analysis of monastery assets by analyzing informatik related to several yeoman families in the surroundings and by gathering as much information as possible about the parish network between Kolín and Libice. Along with results of previous analyses, he uses this information as the baseline for contemplation about the function of this territory before the Hussite movement and also for thinking about the importance of individual elements in this area and their mutual relationships.
