Przedstawiono sylwetkę – zarys życia i działalność naukową Adama Dratha. Jest to postać w nauce znana ledwie niektórym geologom, a przypominana okazjonalnie i marginalnie przy prezentacji polskich osiągnięć w Afganistanie i w wydawnictwach jubileuszowych jego rodzimej uczelni – Akademii Górniczej ( obecnie A G H ). A. Drath należał do Polaków, którzy w obcej służbie, na kontraktowym wyjeździe osiągnęli bodaj najwyższe stanowiska – w 1942 r. został Naczelnym Geologiem Ministerstwa Górnictwa Królestwa Afganistanu. Jego postać zasługuje na przybliżenie, gdyż do tej pory Adam Drath, mimo odniesionych sukcesów w reprezentowanej przez siebie dyscyplinie naukowej, nie zaistniał w wydawnictwach encyklopedycznych, biograficznych i branżowych, nawet specjalistycznych.

This article presents an outline of the life and scientific work of Adam Drath. He is a figure barely known to few geologists, and referred to occasionally and marginally during presentations of Polish achievements in Afghanistan or anniversary publications of his university – Mining Academy ( now A G H ). A. Drath is one of the Poles who reached probably the highest position in foreign service – in 1942 Darth became chief geologist of the Ministry of Mines in the Kingdom of Afghanistan. That is why, in authors’ opinion, this character deserves a closer presentation. Despite successes in the represented scientific discipline, his name is not mentioned in encyclopedias or biographical and professional publications, though his scientific achievements are significant.

This study focuses on the demographic processes in Beijing Municipality at the turn of the 21st century and attempts to evaluate a role of China's social policies upon contemporary population changes. Two main determinants influencing present demographic characteristics were taken into consideration: the immigration of temporary workers and one-child policy. Socio-economic processes in Beijing are accompanied by the rapid changes of urban physiognomy as a result of immense city development (new industrial and residential areas) and new investments prepared for the 2008 Olympics. A spatial typology of socio-demographic changes between 1997 and 2007 was created in order to distinguish areas of different demographic and social development. Concluding remarks of this study highlight main characteristics and determinants of Beijing Municipality demographic features and a pace of their changes. Evidences typically found in Beijing clearly show a crucial role of market economy elements which have a great effect upon socio-spatial urban expansion.
