This article is devoted to an analysis of the influence that Cyprian Norwid has had on Józef Czapski’s creative attitude. From this work, Czapski brought his views on the issue of saving individual and collective subjectivity in the context of the turbulent history of the 20th century, as well as his thinking about philosophy, religion, morality, politics and art. Norwid’s inspiration allowed him to formulate the concept of patriotism as a ne-cessity of liberating himself from the limits of national particularism and perceiving the value of assimilating the gains of other nations and pursuing a policy of openness to tol-erance of otherness. Czapski’s attitude also reveals the validity of Norwid’s concept of history as “eternal equalizer” and the necessity of referring the present to tradition.
