The paper presents to Polish linguists of various specializations the Romance etymological dictionary Dictionnaire Étymologique Roman (DÉRom) which, despite having existed for several years, remains entirely unknown in Poland. Its goal is to reconstruct the Romance protolanguage, protoroman, on as many levels as possible. Its novelty lies in the application of the historical-comparative method to modern Romance forms, and reconstructing Proto-Romance forms based on them. Departure from the traditional Latin-leaning etymology brings qualitatively new results to the field of Romance diachronic linguistics. The paper concludes with examples of two dictionary entries.

In 1787‑1789 two volumes of a huge lexicographic work were published, with the title Linguarum totius orbis vocabularia comparativa (…), commonly called Catherine the Great’s Dictionary. The dictionary contains 273 Russian entries from different thematic groups, each one with semantic equivalents in two hundred European and Asiatic languages. All the words, with no exception, are transcribed in the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, independently from the language they represent. The paper deals, in general terms, with the transcription of Portuguese words included in the dictionary.

Celem artykułu jest ustalenie pochodzenia nazw pepitki w językach europejskich. W tekście przedstawia się pokrótce historię tego coraz bardziej popularnego w ostatnich latach deseniu. Główną część artykułu stanowi omówienie określeń pepitki z perspektywy semazjologicznej, którą przyjmuje się z uwagi na fakt, że w językach Europy można wyróżnić kilka grup nazw na podstawie dosłownego znaczenia każdej z nich. Polskie określenia pepitki zostały przejęte z języków: niemieckiego, francuskiego i angielskiego jako zapożyczenia właściwe lub strukturalne.

The aim of the article is to determine the etymology of the names of houndstooth in European languages. A short history of this pattern, more and more popular in recent years, is presented in the text. The main part of the article consists of discussing the designations of houndstooth from a semasiological perspective. This perspective was adopted due to the fact that, in European languages, one can distinguish between several groups of names based on the literal meaning of every name. Polish designations of houndstooth were taken from the German, French and English languages as loanwords or calques.

Artykuł traktuje o pochodzeniu dwóch powszechnie używanych we współczesnej polszczyźnie nazw psianki podłużnej (Solanum melongena): „bakłażan” i „oberżyna”. Szczegółowe zbadanie historii obydwu określeń w szeroko zarysowanym kontekście innych języków europejskich pozwala wyjaśnić, dlaczego są one synonimiczne.

The article deals with the origin of two names of the eggplant (Solanum melongena), commonly used in contemporary Polish: "bakłażan" and "oberżyna". A detailed study of the history of both terms in the wider context of other European languages allows for the explanation as to why they are synonymous.
