The paper presents three guild books of cobblers, and furriers from the 19th century. The texts, most probably written by local people representing the linguistic reality of the 19th c. Działoszyn, are a very interesting record of provincial Polish. The author analyses two aspects of the linguistic data: firstly, she contrasts the characteristic features of the dialect of those times with today's dialect, and, secondly, she points out the charac teristic, features of the 19th c. Polish. The results of structure and phrase analysis are confronted with the corresponding records from the 20th c. Łódź. The author concludes that the guild books in question represent a 19th c. provincial variation of Polish full of dialect characteristics which still exist even today, but, on the other hand, the books try to preserve the contemporary standard norm.
