The article is based on research on the Polish émigré press in the period 1865-1918 carried out at the Department of Retrospective Bibliography for the 19th and 20th Centuries of the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The author discusses the cases of periodicals whose copies have not survived to the present day in publicly accessible libraries and archives. An attempt has been made to identify the possible causes of the poor condition of Polish and émigré periodicals published in the United States.

Artykuł powstał w oparciu o badania nad polską prasą emigracyjną z lat 1865-1918 prowadzone w Pracowni Bibliografii Retrospektywnej XIX i XX w. Instytutu Historii im. T. Manteuffla PAN w Warszawie. Omówione zostały przypadki czasopism, których egzemplarze nie przetrwały do czasów obecnych w publicznie dostępnych bibliotekach i archiwach. Zwrócono uwagę na zły stan zachowania pism polonijnych i emigracyjnych wydawanych na terenie Stanów Zjednoczonych i starano się wskazać jego możliwe przyczyny.
