Postmodernistyczny dyskurs o tożsamości archiwisty na łamach "The American Archivist"

Artykuł to przybliżenie jednego z głównych dyskursów archiwistyki ostatnich dwóch dekad – tożsamości archiwisty i jego miejsca w kulturze, który został prześledzony w publikacjach ukazujących się na łamach „The American Archivist”. By wyjaśnić fenomen dyskursu, autor sięga do pism socjologii, historiografii i antropologii twórców francuskich i anglosaskich. Przedstawiony w artykule kryzys tożsamości archiwisty koresponduje z dominującym nurtem owego czasu – postmodernizmem – w którym to właśnie anglosascy archiwiści upatrują przyczynę marginalizacji roli „sługi ołtarza historii”. W artykule zaprezentowany został stosunek publikujących w amerykańskim periodyku uczonych do tego procesu, przedstawiono także proponowane przez nich pomysły, które mogłyby służyć budowie pozytywnego wizerunku archiwisty we współczesnym społeczeństwie.

This article is an attempt to present one of the most leading discourses in archival literature of the last two decades, which is archivist's identity and his place within the culture. In his research author focused mainly on articles published in academic journal published by the Society of American Archivists - The American Archivist. However to explain the phenomenon of this discourse in proper depth author extended his research to the writings of sociology, historiography and anthropology available in French and English literature. Crisis of archivist's identity, presented in this article, corresponds with the prevailing trend of the time - postmodernism - also seen by American archivists as the main reason for the marginalization of the role of "servant of the altar of history". Authors of quoted articles not only do not remain indifferent to this negative process, but they offer solutions which could lead to creation of new and improved image of an archivist in postmodern, democratic and information society. Discussed, in this article, are issues regarding public relations, openness and access to archives, their marketing, as well as education functions. Furthermore, article provides insight into the specific way of writing about archive studies on the other continent, that is with greater attention to lightness and wit of style, which keeps the maximum pragmatism. Article ends with a series of questions which author poses to the changing status of archive and archivist. These questions, although will remain unanswered, expose the seemingly dynamic change.

Jeśli wartością, zgodnie z duchem naszych czasów i dobrem wszystkich klientów archiwów, jest różnorodność dziedziny archiwalnej, to celem nie jest gromadzenie archiwaliów proweniencji prywatnej przez archiwa publiczne lub społeczne, ale zaistnienie na nowo w Polsce archiwów prywatnych. Archiwa publiczne mają naturalne prawo wyłącznego gromadzenia archiwaliów publicznych, poza tym jednak powinna istnieć równość gromadzenia archiwaliów. Archiwa prywatne powinny mieć prawo gromadzenia archiwaliów prywatnych innych twórców, a także archiwaliów społecznych. Właściciele archiwów społecznych i prywatnych powinni mieć prawo wskazania sukcesora spośród archiwów publicznych, społecznych lub prywatnych. Równość archiwów przyczyni się do podniesienia pozycji archiwów publicznych jako instytucji zaufania publicznego. Archiwa publiczne będą prowadziły rejestr archiwów społecznych i prywatnych. Zmiana własności nie będzie odbywała się bez wiedzy archiwów publicznych. Archiwa publiczne będą zobowiązane przejąć archiwalia społeczne lub prywatne w przypadku niemożności dalszego ich istnienia.

If, pursuant to the spirit of our time, and the interest of all the users of the archives, the versatility of the domain of archive studies, has the greatest value, then our goal is not to accumulate the archives of private provenance by the public or social data archives, but rather, to strive for the private archives in Poland to come about again. The public archives have natural right to exclusivity as far as amassing public archival materials is concerned. However, apart from that, parity of the right to cumulate materials ought to be upheld. Private archives ought to have the right to gather materials of other private archivists, as well as social data archives. The owners of such private archives, should also have the right to appoint an inheriting subject from among the public or private archives. Parity of archives will contribute towards an upswing in the position of the public archives as an institution of public trust. The public archives will keep a registry of private and social data archives. The latter will not be conveyed to anyone without the knowledge of the public archives. Public archives will also be required to take possession of the private and social data archive materials, in the event of their being closed down.
