The authors recall the genesis of the term of “sustainable development” and its complex evolution over the past decades until its contemporary meaning covering humans and their economy and culture, the natural environment, and the cultural landscape. The examples analysed in the text are two municipalities in the New Castile Community of Madrid (Spain) and their capitals: El Chinchón and Colmenar de Oreja, which are hidden in the shadow of Madrid and have been declining until recent times. Over the past several years, they and their surroundings have been experiencing a period of peaceful and harmonious development, which can be associated with sustainable development.

Autorzy tekstu przypominają genezę terminu „rozwój zrównoważony” i jego zawiłą ewolucję w minionych kilkudziesięciu latach aż po jego współczesne znaczenie ujmujące człowieka z jego gospodarką i kulturą, środowisko przyrodnicze i krajobraz kulturowy. Przykładami analizowanymi w tekście są dwie gminy (municypia) w Nowej Kastylii w Comunidad de Madrid (Hiszpania) wraz z ich stolicami: El Chinchón i Colmenar de Oreja, skryte w cieniu Madrytu, do niedawna podupadające. W ostatnich kilkunastu latach przeżywają one, wraz z ich najbliższym otoczeniem, okres spokojnego, harmonijnego rozwoju, który z powodzeniem można utożsamiać z rozwojem zrównoważonym.

El artículo desarrolla algunas reflexiones sobre las relaciones que unen la ciudad (las ciudades) con el medio ambiente en sus alrededores. Los autores, basándose en la literatura y, también, en las investigaciones de campo realizadas en Ecuador y en España, emprendieron la tarea de clasificar dichas relaciones, indicando tres tipos de las mismas. El primero consiste en una constante expansión de la ciudad, unida a la apropiación y privatización del espacio público que pueden ser asociadas con la actuación depredadora y parasitaria en relación con el medio ambiente. El segundo tipo de relaciones entre la ciudad y su entorno natural es una especie de coexistencia que podemos asociar con la simbiosis. El tercero, es el más armonioso, equilibrado y que preserva para las generacion es futuras no solo el medio ambiente, sino también el patrimonio cultural.

This article is an attempt to reflect on the relationships linking city (cities) with the surrounding natural environment. Based on literature review and field research in Ecuador and Spain, the authors have attempted to classify those relationships. Three types of those can be distinguished. The first is the constant expansion of the city, appropriation and privatization of the public space, associated with environmentally harmful parasitism and predation. The second type of relationship between city and its surroundings is a kind of coexistence similar symbiosis. The third type of relationship is the most harmonious and balanced, preserving for future generations, not only the environment, but also the cultural heritage.
