A well-organised and efficient system for providing access to public information increases the effectiveness of the work of public stakeholders, awareness and participation of citizens, and trust in the government and state institutions. For this system to function correctly, it needs an appropriate legal framework as well as permanent supervision of all its elements. Given the lack of an independent specialised institution overseeing the enforceability of the right to access to information, the task is taken over by active citizens operating in non-governmental organisations. The article discusses the contribution of Polish third sector organisations to increasing the openness and transparency in public life. The author presents examples of advocacy, watchdog, consulting and education actions.
