The main goal of the research is the analysis of the evolution of safety and security theory from the ancient times till the presence, when the new discipline Security Science has aroused. The analysis of security approaches and how new discipline was born revolves around two main assumptions: a) the conviction that war and peace are the main ategories that influence human perception of safety and security; b) man plays a dominant role in shaping the security environment in its different dimensions through the history from the ancient times till the presence. The high degree of generalization of the research and mainly the method of critical analysis of literature have been applied in order to discuss the critical issues and inspire readers to perceive security holistically in its individual, national global dimensions.

Celem badań podjętych w tym artykule jest analiza ewolucji teorii bezpieczeństwa od starożytności aż po czasy współczesne, w których rezultatem interdyscyplinarnych badań i dyskusji jest nowo powstała dyscyplina naukowa „nauki o bezpieczeństwie”. Głównymi założeniami, wokół których dokonano analizy pojmowania i definiowania bezpieczeństwa, są: a) przekonanie, że wojna i pokój to podstawowe kategorie, które najbardziej wpływają na odczuwanie poziomu bezpieczeństwa przez człowieka; b) człowiek ma dominującą rolę w kreowaniu środowiska bezpieczeństwa w różnych jego wymiarach na przestrzeni dziejów i to nie tylko naszej cywilizacji, zaczynając od starożytności, aż po czasy współczesne. Przyjęto duży stopień ogólności w podejściu badawczym oraz zastosowano głównie metodę krytycznej analizy treści literatury, aby podjąć najistotniejsze kwestie w celu zainspirowania czytelnika do holistycznego postrzegania problemów bezpieczeństwa w wymiarze jednostkowym, narodowym i globalnym.

The purpose of this article is to draw the reader’s attention to the research problems of military leadership that are identified at the lowest levels of command in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland. The authors presented cases of soldiers who present various attitudes in the context of understanding the role of a military leader, as well as ambiguously perceived competencies in this area, including their self-assessment. The problem of a systemic approach to the formation of leadership competencies in military education units is addressed, and the dangers of low levels of commander traits, aptitudes, and competencies are highlighted. The final conclusions inspire the reader to gain knowledge and undertake interdisciplinary research on military leadership.
