Maintenance payments are a necessary and very important instrument of Polish legislation. It should be remembered that not only minor children are entitled to receive this type of benefits, because adults who are unable to support themselves are also entitled to them. Alimony is a regular and, above all, obligatory benefit payable to minor children. Maintenance benefits are intended to meet the child's basic needs. This article discusses the topic of the parents' maintenance obligation towards the child, along with the scope of these benefits. In addition, the statute of limitations for alimony was also analyzed and the consequences of failure to pay alimony were discussed.

Świadczenia alimentacyjne są niezbędnym i nader istotnym instrumentem polskiego ustawodawstwa. Pamiętać należy, iż nie tylko małoletnie dzieci są uprawnione do pobierania tego typu świadczeń, bo przecież dorośli, którzy nie są w stanie się samodzielnie utrzymać, również mają do nich prawo. Alimenty są regularnym, a przede wszystkim obligatoryjnym świadczeniem, płatnym na rzecz małoletnich dzieci. Świadczenia alimentacyjne służą zaspokojeniu podstawowych potrzeb dziecka. W treści niniejszego artykułu poruszono temat obowiązku alimentacyjnego rodziców względem dziecka wraz z zakresem tychże świadczeń. Ponadto, analizie zostało poddane również przedawnienie alimentów, a także omówiono skutki niepłacenia alimentów.
