It is commonly held among specialists on ancient Near East that women in ancient Israel did not have much space in official public sphere. However, biblical texts witness to their special role as mourners. This paper presents some terminological considerations regarding the mourning women as presented in the Hebrew Bible (esp. Jer 9,16-21), the rituals that accompanied mourning, and the meaning of these women for society. Furthermore, the paper considers the role of the mourning women in the cultic life (Ez 8,14). Finally, a particular attention will be paid to Ritzpah, a special case of a mourning woman in the Bible (2 Sam 21,1-14).

This article focuses on the progress of the widow‘s position in ancient Israel – from a weak, defenseless woman to a strong, brave heroine. Being a widow in patriarchal societies like ancient Israel was not easy. Widows, along with orphans and foreigners, were a social class on the edge of society in need of strong economical and legal protection. This article will focus on Judith, the main character in an OT book of the same name. First, we shall outline the position of women and widows in ancient Israel in general. Second, we shall take a closer look at the position of widows in the Book of Psalms as the largest corpus in the OT. And third, we will examine the figure of Judith as a prototype of courageous widow. According to some scholars, a possibility exists that the rehabilitation of widows and their acceptance by society was the chief motif for the composition of this book.

It facilitates the choice of the more original text and helps to understand the differences in textual variants. This article is, by and large, an exercise in textual criticism, with a particular focus on the story of David and Goliath in 1 Sam 17.

This article focuses on the reception of Psalm 110 in ch. 5 of Hebrews. It begins by briefly introducing the general usage and method of identifying OT-quotes, with a brief statistical overview of them in this NT-writing. It then discusses this royal psalm, which is the pillar of Christology throughout the NT, and its application in the Epistle. He discusses the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods. The focus of the present study is the function of Ps 110:4 and its incorporation with the exegesis in ch. 5. It compares the accounts of the human high priest and Christ, analysing Hebr 5:1-10 in detail. He also suggests other places of application of Ps 110 and the related Ps 2 in the Epistle.
