The article presents the stories of Jewish inhabitans of Nowy Targ under German occupation. Nowy Targ is a relatively small Polish-Jewish town in Polish Podhale (South of Poland). Their fate is reconstructed based on diverse historical sources, administrative documents as well as personal evidence. With the events of the entire Nowy Targ community in context, stories of a few families have been chosen to illustrate the individual dimension of the Holocaust. The article begins with a descripton of selected families; next, the author focuses on events from the period of indirect extermination which included economic repression, ghettoisation and social exclusion of Nowy Targ Jewry. The following part concerns the actual Holocaust (extermination) with special attention paid to the stories of individual people – the first executions and deportations in June 1942 as well as the events from August 30, 1942 when several hundred people were shot at the Nowy Targ cemetery while the remaining Jews were deported to Bełżec. Next, one reads about Jewish forced laborers employed in local work camps belonging to Hobag company and the reality of life in the town of Judenrein is presented. The article closes with a description of some after-war returns of the Survivors, the murders perpetrated on them and the end of the Jewish presence in Nowy Targ.

Artykuł przedstawia historie żydowskich mieszkańców Nowego Targu w czasie okupacji niemieckiej. Nowy Targ to stosunkowo niewielkie polsko-żydowskie miasto na polskim Podhalu (południowa część Polski). Ich losy są rekonstruowane na podstawie różnorodnych źródeł historycznych, dokumentów administracyjnych, a także osobistych świadectw. Mając w kontekście wydarzenia dotyczące całej społeczności Nowego Targu, wybrano historie kilku rodzin, aby zilustrować indywidualny wymiar Holokaustu. Artykuł rozpoczyna się od charakterystyki wybranych rodzin, następnie autorka skupia się na wydarzeniach z okresu eksterminacji pośredniej, która obejmowała represje ekonomiczne, gettoizację i wykluczenie społeczne nowotarskich Żydów. Kolejna część dotyczy samego Holokaustu (zagłady), ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem historii poszczególnych osób – pierwszych egzekucji i deportacji w czerwcu 1942 r. oraz wydarzeń z 30 sierpnia 1942 r., kiedy to na nowotarskim cmentarzu rozstrzelano kilkaset osób, a pozostałych Żydów wywieziono do Bełżca. Następnie czytamy o żydowskich robotnikach przymusowych zatrudnionych w okolicznych obozach pracy należących do firmy Hobag i przedstawione są realia życia w miasteczku Judenrein. Artykuł zamyka opis powojennych powrotów Ocalałych, dokonanych na nich mordów i końca żydowskiej obecności w Nowym Targu.
