The present paper is devoted to one of the methods of handwriting research, i.e. The comparative-graphic method which — owing to its versatility — is the most frequently applied in experts’ opinion-making practice. The reflections included in the text cover the issues regarding, above all, the basic assumptions of this method, requirements concerning the examined material, the course of research, experts’ problems with the criteria to draw final conclusions, as well as the difficulties faced by handwriting experts, resulting from the specific character of examined material which heavily relies on the psychophysical properties of the author of the handwriting, causing fluctuations in some circumstances, which in turn may impede the research and conclusion process. The present publication is primarily addressed to practitioners, i.e. persons who — for professional reasons — appoint handwriting experts, and evaluate the opinions issued by such experts, meaning the broadly understood judicial bodies. It can also serve as a teaching aid for students attending forensic, criminal or civil procedure courses.

The children witness hearing belongs to special trial activities and requires a special approach of judges, prosecutors, policemen who are responsible for its conduct. The most extensive regulations are those concerning witness hearing in a criminal proceding. In civil and administrative procedure the regulations are evaluated as insufficient. The person questioning the children has to have psychological and forensic science knowledge. Those fields of science formulate the tactical rules of child hearing. Their first aim is the protection of children from negative results of participation in law trials and the second aim is to receive trusted information concerning circumstances of law case. This publication is presenting the tactical rules which can be used in law proceedings.

The problem raised is important inasmuch as drawing conclusions from handwriting may, in many cases, determine aperson’s fate, which does not only involve opinion making in criminal or civil cases, but also those related to applying arelevant therapy to aperson with mental function disorders, or psychiatric and neurological disorders; to proper guidance on achild’s school career or anadult person’s professional career development; to apossibility of undertaking aparticular action, etc. It shall also be highlighted that the following reflections present Polish realities with regard to the raised problems, and they also show some controversies which arise with regard to the selected cognitive methods. The present publication is primarily addressed to practitioners, i.e. persons who – for their professional reasons – hire handwriting experts, and evaluate the opinions issued by such experts, meaning the broadly understood judicial bodies. It can also serve as a teaching aid for students attending forensic, criminal or civil procedure courses.

Handwriting is a method to express and preserve thoughts by means of graphic signs. In the investigative and judicial practice, it is treated as an individual creation used for identification purposes in case of doubts over the authenticity of a written record. Nowadays, however, writing by hand is not the only way of conveying information, which results in moving away from this traditional method in favour of modern solutions. In the future, this tendency may limit the possibility to identify the author of a record on the basis of a handwritten record. Therefore, the purpose of this publication is to check whether contemporary handwritings show any signs of deterioration in the quality of handwritten records.

Undoubtedly, handwriting research contributes to broadening knowledge about the mechanism of development of handwriting ability. Most papers tend to discuss this issue on a global basis, taking into account graphisms of persons who are learning to write from first principles, although it should be noted that the sphere of handwriting examiners’ interest also covers more detailed issues, such as left-handedness. This problem has involved handwriting experts for years, and for that reason the objective of the present publication is to present, in an abbreviated form, the directions of experimental studies conducted on left-handed handwriting, and the results obtained in that field.
