Strukturą wykorzystywaną do interpretowania doświadczeń jest tzw. rama odniesienia (frame of reference).

The theory of Jack Mezirow, the famous American andragogue, is that of transformative learning, a process of learning particular for adults, which is based on a change in the method, in which an individual experience is given significance. The structure used for interpreting experiences is a so-called frame of reference, that is a set of assumptions and expectations of an individual pertaining to what is interpreted. In situations where the existing frame of reference does not allow for efficient interpretation of new experiences, reframing may occur following a critical reflexion. This can entail a change in point of view or a habit of mind. The ability of critical reflexion is, according to Mezirow, the essence of adult learning and transformation the aim of that teaching.
