There are about 2000 health promoting schools in Poland. They create the conditions conducive to the promotion of health and health education in the school environment, in cooperation with parents and the local community. Health-oriented approach covers all areas of health, the sphere of physical, psychological, spiritual and social. Based on a review of work published between 1992–2011, the article presents the most important issues related to the history of health promoting schools in Poland and characterizes the objectives, the approach and main assumptions of HPS. It also presents the areas of action and discusses the differences in the traditional approach to action for health, comparing traditional and health promoting schools. It also highlights the essence of caries prevention programs in HPS.
