The first part of this article aims at locating the experiences of Polish migrants attending Philip course – a three-day event run by the charismatic group Cor et Lumen Christi - within wider context of charismatic movement. The second part is an attempt to describe the course and to analyse its form and content with a focus on the experiences of people participating in the course. The aim here is to capture the socially constructed meaning of that experience as embedded in the social and institutional context of migration and structural developments of the Catholic Church catering for religious needs of Polish migrants in the UK.
W artykule przedstawiamy, w jaki sposób figura Maryi – matki Jezusa - funkcjonuje jako ważny element religii przeżywanej wśród współczesnych muzułmańskich i katolickich matek w Polsce.

In this paper, we demonstrate how the figure of the Virgin Mary functions as an important element of the lived religion of contemporary Catholic and Muslim mothers in Poland. Based on the analysis of in-depth interviews and observational data we argue that the figure of Mary is recognized as a religious ideal and a role model by mothers identifying with both religions. We trace similarities and differences between Catholic and Muslim mothers in their reflexive engagement with ideas, symbols, and prescriptions attached to Mary and discuss how they reinvent the figure and ascribe it with personalised meanings: embrace some of the traditional attributes of Mary, challenge, and contest others, and construct new meanings firmly embedded in their daily life mothering experiences.
Poland is a country where Muslims constitute a small minority. Although official and unofficial estimates differ significantly, the size of Muslim community does not exceed 0.5% of the total population. The institutionalized religious life of Muslims in Poland takes place primarily within two religious associations – the Muslim Religious Union and the Muslim League in the Republic of Poland. Polish Muslims, looking for opportunities to create a community and belong to it do this mainly outside the institutional sphere; they meet in informal groups. In order to acquire religious knowledge and develop their spiritual life, they use various religious sources – including the Internet. In recent years, the practice of sharing khutbas online in a form of text or video recordings has become increasingly popular. In this paper we focus on the khutbas delivered in three masjids run by three different organizations – the Muslim Religious Union, the Muslim League in the Republic of Poland and the Sakinah Foundation. We use elements of content analysis and thematic analysis to answer the following questions: 1) how do khutbas convey Islam to the faithful – is it a teaching of the principles of faith, or rather a message that is intended to stimulate faith, emotions and moral dispositions related to Islam; which of these elements are most emphasized; 2) how khutbas fit into the Polish cultural context at the lexical and content level; and 3) whether and to what extent the khutbas delivered in Polish mosques raise socio-political issues and therefore go beyond the par excellence religious themes?
Detailed analysis of the research results pertaining to the role of religion in acculturation process of Poles in UK clearly points to the fact that Polish priest become a key person for understanding dynamic of acculturation process of both groups: immigrants and host population. Therefore the following perspectives on the role of Polish priest will be provided: • Perspective of Polish priests working in UK • Perspective o Polish parishioners • Perspective of British parishioners • Perspectives of Polish church hierarchy • Perspectives of British Church hierarchy • Perspectives of British priest with whom Polish priest shares work in the parish Paper points to various difficulties in fulfilling expectations of different groups towards Polish priests, conflictual characteristic of priest’s role, and deficits in proper preparation of priests for their work in UK. As the theoretical background of the process The Interactive Acculturation Model ( Bourhis, Moise, Perreault, Senecal 1997) will be employed. The model points to the influence of host population on the final outcome of acculturation process of newly arriving group.
The article discusses the interpenetration of medical and religious perspectives on abortion in the Polish public debate. Taking into account doctors’ statements, an analysis of media discourse following two deaths of pregnant women in 2021 and 2023 reveals convergences in medical and Catholic practices of discursively constructing the fetus as a subject and limiting reproductive autonomy by defining the autonomous decision to have an abortion as an encroachment on someone else’s (medical or divine) competence. The reflections are set in the context of the phenomenon of the medicalisation of pregnancy and the history of anti-abortion alliances between the Catholic Church and the Polish medical community.
