Inne morze Claudia Magrisa. Na granicy między twórczością dzienną i nocną W niniejszym artykule postawiono sobie za cel zilutrowanie szczególnej pozycji, jaką w twórczości triesteńczyka Claudia Magrisa zajmuje jego krótka powieść Inne morze z 1991 roku. Niezwykle pomocny w analizie okazuje się motyw granicy, znany i charakterystyczny dla całej twórczości pisarza, w Innym morzu obecny szczególnie wyraźnie i pełniący funkcję dominującą. Dokonana w powieści próba rekonstrukcji losów Enrica Mreule, bohatera dążącego do osiągnięcia stanu Michelsaedterowskiej perswazji, jest w istocie biografią człowieka żyjącego „na granicy”; tam, gdzie zaciera się różnica między życiem a śmiercią, klęską a spełnieniem, a także – również tutaj – między Magrisowską utopią a odczarowaniem. Inną istotną cechą powieści jest jej swoista hybrydyczność widziana najlepiej z perspektywy całej twórczości literackiej autora. Wyróżniane przez Magrisa (i odnajdywane przez krytykę w poszczególnych dziełach) dzienny i nocny nurt pisarstwa splatają się w Innym morzu, a ich zręczne kontrapunktowanie się czyni z utworu romanzo del confine, powieść graniczną par excellence.

„It was all there already, from the beginning” – Microcosms by Claudio Magris as a Triestineauto/bio/geography Abstract The aim of my article is to study the relation between the subject and the city, focusing on thecase of an autobiographic essayistic novel by a contemporary Italian writer Claudio Magris.The space of Trieste, author’s native city, plays a multiple role in the Microcosms narration.On one hand, it works as a “mnemotechnical pretext” for the protagonist’s sentimentaljourney into the past, both individual and collective. On the other hand, the city space canbe seen as an active factor, shaping the hero’s “triestine” state of mind and reflecting itself inthe novel’s poetics. In my analysis, I refer to some essential categories of geopoetics (“auto/bio/geography” by Elżbieta Rybicka, Tadeusz Sławek’s and Stefan Symotiuk’s interpretationsof genius loci), as well as to Walter Benjamin’s oeuvre, which I consider one of the mostimportant Microcosms’ intertexts. The aim of this article is to explain the meaning and analyse the role of the journey along the Danube river in the novel Danube by Claudio Magris. The analisys presents two separate interpretations of the literary odyssey. The first one emphasizes the importance of the journey understood as georgaphical, philosophical and sociological research of the novel’s protagonist (the author’s alter-ego: a scholar, a germanist and a traveller in one). The second one highlights it’s meaning for the development of the protagonist’s identity, illustrating the ways in which the unique “hapsburg” manner of travelling affects his life and his personality. In order to underline the existential dimension of the journey, the article presents and analyses the scenes where the main character in shown as a disciple, who follows his spiritual guides to learn about himself and about the human nature.
