During the totalitarian period in the USSR, during the domination of atheism, there were also writers whose work included religious themes. Michail Bulgakov and Chingiz Aitmatov in their novels ‘The Master and Margarita’ and ‘The Place of the Skull’ devoted an entire storyline to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The aim of the study is – based on the context of the writer‘s life and work, to identify the author‘s motivation, and subsequently the function of biblical plots in the selected novels.
