This paper is a part of a monograph devoted to the language of poetry in Jan Gawiński (1624-1664). Over 90 proverbe, proverbial expressions and ma xims found in J. Gawiński are discussed- The paper establishes, first of all, the origin and the authorship of the phraseological expressions analysed here and their linguistic and stylis tic functions. The comparison of the material discussed with Nova księga przysłów ed. by J. Krzyżanowski, makes it possible to ascribe J. Gawiński an undeniable authorship of these two proverbs. The poet may be supposed to have created, in some cases, a new paremiographic variation of a proverb or he might have introduced to literature a proverb which, so far, has been exclusively used in oral communication.
