This paper is devoted to a discussion of the anthroponymy of the former Volynia and Chelmia territory. It presents naming patterns used among Ukrainian privileged class. The most important issues discussed in this paper are as follows: – a presentation and characteristics of naming styles using elements after the first name which refer to men, with an indication of the frequency of the suffixes; – a presentation of the evolution of additional identifiers; – a presentation of the most typical naming patterns, also depending on the type of source document; and – the similarities and dissimilarities between Ukrainian and Polish anthroponymy in olden day Volynia and Chelmia, the scope of mutual interference between the Ukrainian and Polish languages and different anthroponymic systems.

The article is an attempt to look at Jesus’ prayer as a common spiritual heritage of all Christians, including the Polish and the Ukrainian, and at the same time a synthesis of the current thoughts on this prayer tradition, which is one of the oldest forms of Christian contemplative prayer. It originates from the Holy Scriptures and meditations of the Word of God, it was practiced and developed by the Desert Fathers, Fathers of the Church, monks, clergy and laity, above all in the Churches of the Christian East. Today, the most widespread is in the Orthodox and Greek Catholic Church, but for many years has been experiencing a kind of revival in the Catholic Church. The article presents the teaching of the Church, its saints and contemporary spiritual masters on this subject.

The article presents the history and development process of the Department of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Warsaw. Attention was drawn to the traditions and the direction of scientifi c research in the fi eld of literary studies, cultural studies and linguistics, as well as didactic and organizational activity, achievements and contribution to the multiplication of Ukrainian studies abroad.

The most important issues discussed in this paper are as follows: − a presentation and characteristics of naming styles using ele ments after the fi rst name which refer to men, with an indication of the frequency of the suffi xes; − the similarities and dissimilarities between Ukrainian and Polish anthroponymy in olden day, the scope of mutual interference between the Polish and Ukrainian lan guages and diff erent anthroponymic systems. Materials for this paper are composed of archival and prints sources.

This article was written in the memory of Roman Ivanovych Ostash, a prominent Ukrainian onomastic researcher, dialectologist and lexicographer, a man with a great heart and moral authority. This article presents the story of his life, scientifi c activity and his contribution to the development of the Ukrainian linguistics. Very rich scientifi c achievements of Roman Ivanovych Ostash have been shown in the context of his cooperation with a number of researchers and academic institutions in Ukraine and abroad. The article has been included in full bibliography of his scientific papers.

The article is devoted to some aspects of the analysis of the interaction of language and society in the modern paradigm. Its results relate to the formation of the content of such categories as “Ukrainian sociolinguistic tradition”, “periods of the development of knowledge about the social nature of language”, “sociological direction in Ukrainian linguistics”, “codifi cation”, “codifi cation on a folk basis”, “asymmetric communication situation”, “social - individual nature of family communication”, “social nature of a name”, “social functions of the Ukrainian language in the church”, “conversion to Orthodoxy of Greek Catholics”, “Ukrainization in the 20-30s of the twentieth century”. Researchers also analyze modern aspects of language-nation interaction, language-national security, the concept of “institutional language management”, “language discrimination”, “hate speech as a form of discursive discrimination”, “linguistic landscape”, informal names in the socio-group “ students”, communication in the socio-group “political elite”, etc. In general, the results obtained in the works of representatives of Lviv sociolinguistic circle contribute to the development of the terminological system and the categorical base of historical, theoretical, applied and cognitive sociolinguistics.
